SIGCSE Goals “forum for educators to discuss issues related to the development, implementation, and/or evaluation of computing programs, curricula, and courses, as well as syllabi, laboratories, and other elements of teaching and pedagogy” SIGCSE perceived to be the premier organization for computing education Primarily serve Post-secondary Computer Science Teach Faculty Computer Science Education Research Faculty Many activities in making CS1 and CS2 effective Secondarily serve Pre-College faculty (relationship with CSTA) Other Post-secondary teaching faculty in related computing disciplines

Goals Extend reach and influence of Computing Education Majority of members on ACM Education committees are or have been SIGCSE officers or large conference leadership Extend influence beyond US Computer Science International conferences ICER workshop abroad and US NSF grant with CSTA In cooperation with many conferences, US and internationally Australiasian, New Zealand, Koli Calling, AAAI Fund SIGCSE presenters to take conference presentations to regional conferences, especially CCSC Major player in NSF funded Computing Education Summit

Goals Large Broadening Participation in Computing thread at SIGCSE Symposium -- goal to increase interest in computing Kids Camp at Symposium Support for Doctoral Symposium Member leadership in NCWIT, NSF BPC projects, CPATH Provide continuing education for a for members at Symposia number of workshops continue to grow at Symposium 36 in 2009, 39 in 2010 Preparing Students for IPv6 Introducing and Teaching Smartphone Application Development New Faculty Workshop Department Chairs Roundtable Blogs by members widely read

Member Benefits 2600 members 3 conferences and CDs 1200 attendee US hosted Symposium ~200 attendee non-US ITiCSE Conference ~50 attendee research conference (workshop) Quarterly newsletter (currently 1 issue Symposium proceedings, 3 magazine style including columns, edited articles, etc. and peer reviewed papers from ITiCSE working groups) DL access numbers $56K in FY 2009 Small research grants in learning and teaching (Special Projects) Very active member list servs – e.g. members.sigcse.org 1200 opt in discussions on all aspects of CS Ed

Chair’s Report • Membership numbers high (2600) • Two-year retention among highest of the SIGs (87%) • ACM’s SIG Governing Board found SIGCSE viable for the next 4 years • Warning – SIGCSE conference fee will increase in 2011 (NB CCSC 24 hr conference average $139) • By-laws passed • New website
