  1. Applied Science SIL 2019 AIM: To be fully prepared for the start of Unit 15 and give yourself the best chance of achieving a distinction on the first assignment. Read the resources, links and watch the videos. Complete the tasks at the end of each section and make sure you understand the following: Be able to label a prokaryotic cell and explain the functions of the cell parts. Be able to label a eukaryotic cell and explain the functions of the cell parts. Be able to explain how organelles work together to make and secrete a protein in eukaryotes

  2. Be able to label a prokaryotic cell and explain the functions of the cell parts. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfEFw4dcEFw&t=0s&index=5&list=PL0Mjub5NT757WwL_BTIZzW09lJYk5ChQn • https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/structure-of-a-cell/prokaryotic-and-eukaryotic-cells/a/prokaryotic-cells http://www.ivyroses.com/Biology/Cells/Prokaryotic-Cell-Structure.php

  3. Prokaryotes (Bacteria) – Functions of organelles

  4. Prokaryotes (Bacteria) – Functions of organelles

  5. Prokaryotes (Bacteria) – Functions of organelles

  6. Prokaryotes (Bacteria) – Functions of organelles Medically, pili are virulence factors for pathogenic bacteria. A virulence factor is any property of a bacterial cell that allows the bacterium to infect another organism. Pili are considered virulence factors because they allow bacterial cells to adhere to tissues and can help the bacterial cells resist attack from immune cells in the human body. In turn, the bacterial cells can colonize the tissue and spread throughout the body, causing the organism to become sick. https://www.reference.com/science/function-pili-ee31dd8ca8ed8950

  7. The capsule is considered a virulence factor because it enhances the ability of bacteria to cause disease (e.g. prevents phagocytosis). The capsule can protect cells from engulfment by eukaryotic cells, such as macrophages Prokaryotes (Bacteria) – Functions of organelles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacterial_capsule

  8. Tasks: 1. Test yourself http://www.phschool.com/science/biology_place/biocoach/cells/identify.html 2. Draw and label a prokaryotic (bacterial cell). Write the functions of each cell part (plasmid / flagellum / pili / capsule.

  9. 2. Be able to label a eukaryotic cell and explain the functions of the cell parts. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfEFw4dcEFw&t=0s&index=5&list=PL0Mjub5NT757WwL_BTIZzW09lJYk5ChQn • https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/structure-of-a-cell/prokaryotic-and-eukaryotic-cells/a/intro-to-eukaryotic-cells http://www.ivyroses.com/HumanBody/Cells/Cell_Structure.php

  19. 3. Be able to explain how organelles work together to make and secrete a protein in eukaryotes • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfEFw4dcEFw&t=0s&index=5&list=PL0Mjub5NT757WwL_BTIZzW09lJYk5ChQn – end of the video.

  20. 3. Be able to explain how organelles work together to make and secrete a protein in eukaryotes

  21. Tasks: • 1. Test yourself • Can you draw a flow diagram or sequence the order of events for how a protein is made and secreted from a cell.
