  1. Revelation Outline • Introduction. (ch. 1) 1. The Seven Letters to the Seven Churches (chs. 2-3) 2. The Vision of the Seven Seals (4:1-8:5) 3. The Vision of the Seven Trumpets (8:6-11:19) 4. The Seven Visions (chs. 12-15) 5. The Vision of the Seven Bowls (ch. 16) 6. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) 7. The Victory over Satan (20:1-22:5) • Conclusion. (22:5-21)

  2. The Vision of the Seven Trumpets (8:6-11:19) • NIV Romans 8:22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

  3. The Vision of the Seven Trumpets (8:6-11:19) • What is meant by bondage to decay? After the Fall into Sin, this creation is slowly seeing the truth of sin come to light – all falls apart outside of God’s will. It is true that we see God’s grace keep this creation from totally falling apart and at times reversing sin’s effects in it. But it is also true that this universe has begun a slow descent into chaos outside of God’s diving design for it.

  4. The Vision of the Seven Trumpets (8:6-11:19) • This Vision takes a cosmic look at creation and the Christian’s role in it. This creation is in a bondage to decay. Yet God lovingly draws men’s hearts to Himself. The following judgments occur to lead men to repent sin. Read 9:20-21. God is not the author of evil in this world but has chose to allow us to see this world as fallen and broken so we repent.

  5. Severed Tree Limb • We are cut off from the original glory of this creation. • Imagine a tree limb cut off. • What does it look like a day latter? • A week latter? • A month latter? • A year latter? • A decade latter? • We are cut off (and diminished) from an original glory for this creation?

  6. The First Trumpet

  7. The First Trumpet • NIV Revelation 8:6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them. 7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down upon the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up

  8. The First Trumpet • Rain brings forth life. • This is death rained down on earth.

  9. FIRST TRUMPET Food for life diminished. FIRST BOWL OF GOD’S WRATH No food. No life. Eternal death and torment. CHAPTERS 8-11. CHAPTER 16. The present fallen world.Hell arrives.

  10. The First Trumpet • The first trumpet sounds to remind us that the vegetative life that we see is not in its original beauty.

  11. The Second Trumpet

  12. The Vision of the Seven Trumpets (8:6-11:19) • 8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

  13. The Second Trumpet • The fireball might be a gigantic image of siege or naval warfare that Romans used.

  14. The Second Trumpet • The second trumpet sounds to remind us that the beautiful seas and oceans are not in their original splendor.

  15. SECOND TRUMPET The sea, its creatures, and safe passage diminished. SECOND BOWL OF GOD’S WRATH The sea is completely dead. CHAPTERS 8-11. CHAPTER 16. The present fallen world.Hell arrives.

  16. The Third Trumpet

  17. The Third Trumpet • 10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water-- 11 the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

  18. The Third Trumpet • Drinking water is diminished that is able to be consumed. • The meteor is from heaven as judgment came down from heaven upon Egypt. • Wormwood is a bitter poison.

  19. THIRD TRUMPET Healthy drinking water diminished. THIRD BOWL OF GOD’S WRATH No drinking water. Eternal thirst reigns. CHAPTERS 8-11. CHAPTER 16. The present fallen world.Hell arrives.

  20. The Fourth Trumpet

  21. The Fourth Trumpet • 12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night. 13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: "Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!"

  22. The Fourth Trumpet • The fourth trumpet sounds to remind us that the heavens have lost their original splendor.

  23. FOURTH TRUMPET Darkness is prevailing. Heavenly glory diminished. FOURTH BOWL OF GOD’S WRATH Heavenly bodies turn into a searing blaze. CHAPTERS 8-11. CHAPTER 16. The present fallen world.Hell arrives.

  24. The Fourth Trumpet • 13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: "Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!"

  25. The Three Woes 1. Demonic oppression comes for the individual on earth. 2. The demonic uses mankind collectively to do violence to each other and persecute the Church. 3. Hell for the individual and collective without God.

  26. The Eagle • The form of the Eagle of one of the four arch angels is notable that of the spiritual realm. The following judgment after this one are just that.

  27. Spiritual plagues

  28. The Fifth Trumpet

  29. The Fifth Trumpet • NIV Revelation 9:1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.

  30. Star = Angel • This is imagery used before. • NIV Revelation 1:20 The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches.

  31. The Fifth Trumpet • 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

  32. The Fifth Trumpet • The demonic are consuming forces. • They attack with scorpion stings --annoying, painful, but not normally fatal. • The afflicted are those who do not have the seal of the Lord – Baptism, Spirit.

  33. Immunity from demons • NIV Luke 10:17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.“ • NIV Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  34. Immunity from demons • NIV Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  35. The Fifth Trumpet • 5 They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6 During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

  36. Longing to escape life • There is reference to this elsewhere. • NIV 2 Samuel 1:9 "Then he said to me, 'Stand over me and kill me! I am in the throes of death, but I'm still alive.‘

  37. Life without life • Living on earth, but not enjoying life. • People seek release from life that is a burden upon them. • Think of people who hunger for power and fame, then think of people who are often depressed and attacking others. Are they the same?

  38. The Fifth Trumpet • The demonic leave people spiritually hurting and depressed that they contemplate death as a release even though they are healthy. • They attack for only a tiem, a season (5 months is a locust life span).

  39. Demonic warfare • The demons act with authority (crowns), human reason (face), and arrogance (hair). • But they are only interested in consuming the peoples (teeth). • Hair was seen as woman’s’ pride. There also might be reference to Absalom.

  40. The Fifth Trumpet • 7 The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces. 8 Their hair was like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth.

  41. The Fifth Trumpet • 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. 10 They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.

  42. 5 Months • They have power for this kind of torment for only for a time. • This is the lifespan of a locust.

  43. The Fifth Trumpet • 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. 12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.

  44. Another name for the Devil • Destroyer. • The angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. • Why Hebrew and Greek? • The totality of the Bible is primarily written in these. It shows the devil plaguing God’s people throughout history.
