Introduction Is your business housed in an old or historic building? Surely it’s a good thing as it will save you money. You will also get to place your business in an already established location. Even if the building is a recently constructed one, it’s more than likely that you won’t be really thinking about the wiring in the place. Right! Old structures specifically have aging electric system and faulty wiring that you don’t even take a look at, after all they are hidden from your sight, being present behind the plaster and drywall.
1. Faulty breakers Of course the risk is bigger if your building is older, but there’s still danger if the commercial panel hasn’t been upgraded recently. Old breakers tend to trip before their lifespan or not trip when they are supposed to. There is also the possibility of the switches and breakers being faulty. If your building has fuse boxes or oversized breaker, it is time that you update your old wiring.
2. Old insulation on the wiring In past, the insulation used to be of asbestos and then fiberglass, both of which are not at all good and poses potential dangers. Over time, insulation also gets damaged by screws, nails and chewed by animals or simply disintegrate. This leave the wire exposed, increasing the risk of danger in terms of spark and fire.
3. Poorly modified wiring Usually in old buildings, there have been no changes in the wiring. Even after a long time, they remain the same. And if they are, it may have been done by some inexperienced individual with no electrical training. This means, there are huge chances of loose wiring or badly executed connections among number of other issues hidden behind the wall.
4. Low amp wiring The electronics and business equipments we use today requires different power than the ones we used in the past. Older systems are usually rated for about 15 amps or lower whereas the new electrical system have a wiring that are rated for 20 amps or more. So, this can definitely create a serious situation for your building in not having enough power to accommodate all your business equipments.
5. Knob and tube wiring A lot of old buildings use “knob and tube wiring” that in itself is not an issue.
