  7. Landmarks (1) • The Gates of the Mountains:The Gates of the Mountains are located near present day Helena, Montana. The walls are made of limestone. As Lewis and Clark were sailing down the Missouri they met these big walls of limestone. They are named The Gates of the Mountains because at the beginning of the mountains it looked like the walls or mountains were parting.

  8. Landmarks (2) • The Great Falls:There are five falls in all. The falls are outside of present day Great Falls, Montana. The falls were a great menace to Lewis and Clark. It took 18 days just to get around them. The portage was a 16 mile hike. They had to make wheels to haul the canoes up and around the falls. Sometimes the men on horses fell off tumbling down 20 foot falls down the side of the mountain. At the portage they couldn’t take the pirogue around the falls.

  9. Landmarks (3) • Continental Divide:The Continental Divide is an imaginary line that runs down the whole length of the Rocky Mountains.  The Continental Divide prevents rivers and tributaries from running across it East to West or West to East.

  11. State Governor of Montana • On November 2, 2004, John Bohlinger was elected as Montana's Lt. Governor. Brian Schweitzer became the 23rd Governor of the great state of Montana on January 3, 2005. John was born in Bozeman on April 21, 1936, to parents John and Aileen Bohlinger. In 1941, John, his sister Tina, and their parents moved from Bozeman to Billings. His parents opened a women's apparel store called Aileen's, which would become a beloved fixture of downtown Billings. He’s been in office for five years!!!!

  13. Major Industry in Montana • Montana has many mountains, but it also has many plains. Cattle and sheep roam the plains. Some of the land has been turned into farmland, where farmers grow crops of oats, wheat, and other grains. Mining is another major industry in Montana.

  14. Major University- Rocky Mountain College • Rocky Mountain College is located in Billings, Montana, is a private comprehensive college offering more than 25 liberal arts- and professionally-oriented majors. In fall 2009, the college had 894 enrolled students. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the United Church of Christ.
