  2. Ego – an evil or… • We may debate.. Defer in opinion about the Subject matter, but can’t deny the Fact that all humans nurture and INHERIT this trait either genetically or due to upbringing conditions…. Sigmund Freudin 1923 developed a theory and attempted to define Ego. He divided Ego in three Categories : 1. Id , 2. Self – Esteem and 3. Super – Ego. Indian Philosophy: One will realise the futility of man’s ‘I’ ness that is of ego.

  3. Ego – an evil or… • Since the seed of ego is present at the very birth of man, ego is invariably present in everyone be it young or old, rich or poor, educated or uneducated, etc., to a lesser or greater extent. 1. The Lord’s ego : This is a state of no ego, i.e. the ego of the person is literally 0 but such persons are very very rare.

  4. Ego – an evil or… 2. Man’s ego :Man’s ego is again broadly divided into 2 subtypes: 2.1 Pure ego :This is a state of traces of ego seen in Saints. They have just a mere awareness of one’s existence. This trace ego is required for the sustenance's of the body functions. Pure ego can be understood as having the attitude of - Considering oneself to be distinctly Human and not GOD.

  5. Ego – an evil or… • 2.2 Impure ego : Is What most of us experience. Almost all of us identify with our physical body, or feelings and emotions and feel pride in our intellect. This is due to various impressions in the centers of the subtle body like temperamental characteristics, desires, likes and dislikes, etc. Depending on thoughts and emotions, this ego can be either Good or Bad for Self and all others who matter for us. • Good - e.g. constantly striving for happiness, or about sacrifice for others. Bad - believing only in one’s own capability. • According to Jacques Lacan( The French Psychologist): Most of our unconscious life is a product of a variety of external social influences. These normal fragments of personality are often called ego states. No one has a truly single, or unified, personality.

  6. Ego – an evil or… • The Four Ego Faculties :According to Jung, the Ego - the "I" or self-conscious faculty - has four inseparable functions, four different fundamental ways of perceiving and interpreting reality, and two ways of responding to it. He divided people into Thinking, Feeling, Sensation, and Intuition types, arranging these four in a compass.                   Intuition                        Feeling ------|------  Thinking                       |                 Sensation • The four ways of interpreting reality are the four ego-functions - Sensation, Thinking, Feeling, and Intuition.  These consist of two diametrically-opposed pairs.  Thinking is the opposite of Feeling, and Sensation the opposite of Intuition. If a person has the Thinking function highly developed, the  Feeling function will be correspondingly underveloped or Suppressed. The same goes for Sensation and Intuition.

  7. Ego – an evil or… In summary, the ego may be described as that agency which protects the ‘id’ and which must come to terms with the demands of the superego. It represents in large part the individual's social environment, although it is also strongly determined in its development by familial factors A lack of love and acknowledgment during the first years of life may have two kinds of consequences: an autonomous ego may develop which is concerned only with itself, which is narcissistically cathected, and which is capable of achieving remarkable successes in reality without making genuine contact with other individuals or with society; alternatively, the ego may wither, failing either to fashion links with the outside world or to draw satisfaction from within. Ego as a liability : Ever work with someone who has complete self-confidence on any subject regardless of his or her knowledge base? They can tell anybody how to do anything even when they have never tried to do it themselves and do not have any understanding of the complexities involved? Ever been with someone who constantly talks about self and rarely mentions anyone else because they use the word "I" so much of the time? These are cases when egos are a major negative.

  8. Ego – an evil or… • Ego as a problem for others: • If the person has major responsibilities, the negative effect can be a major problem for many people and worse than being just a little embarrassing. • Ego –noun, plural e·gos. • 1. the “I” or self of any person; a person as thinking, feeling, and willing, and distinguishing itself from the selves of others and from objects of its thought. • 2. Psychoanalysis . the part of the psychic apparatus that experiences and reacts to the outside world and thus mediates between the primitive drives of the id and the demands of the social and physical environment. • 3. egotism; conceit; self-importance: Her ego becomes more unbearable each day. • 4. self-esteem or self-image; feelings: Your criticism wounded his ego. • 5. ( often initial capital letter ) Philosophy . • a. the enduring and conscious element that knows experience. • b. Scholasticism . the complete person comprising both body and soul. • 6. Ethnology . a person who serves as the central reference point in the study of organizational and kinship relationships.

  9. Ego – an evil or… • EGO (Latin)– ( Means ‘I’ in English) : • 1. self; feeling of I, me, mine. • 2. subjective made of consciousness that differentiates itself from the objective world. • 3. identity maker, giver of names and forms. • 4. architect who identifies, between the primitive impulses of the id and the demands of society. (Freud). • 5. Higher self, individuality, soul; that which bends every effort to quicken vibration and to force the off rebelling lower vehicle of personality to respond and measure up to rapidly increasing force. (Bailey) • 6. futile effort to secure happiness and maintain itself in relation to something else watcher of egolessness (Trungpa) • 7. veil between the self and God in Hinduism’s. • 8. succession of confusions producing an illusory sense of self in Buddhism. • 9. the evaluating and judging principle.

  10. Ego – an evil or… Between these two extremes every imaginable intermediate situation—or "ego state"—may be met with. But such ego states also depend on an outside world with the capacity to transform the ego-ideal into an ideal ego which, as early as the third year of life, allies itself with the superego to form an agency of great power in the life of the individual. Thus the earliest object relationships produce distinct character types: an ego strong in its narcissism but socially ill-adapted; an ego that is weak, and undeveloped in all respects; or an ego that is bound to a strong superego and thus able to assert itself in the world. This last type is represented by highly religious individuals and probably constitutes the commonest form of human life. • Big Ego: An Asset, Liability or a Big Problem for Others: Ego is a powerful tool for someone who needs to lead others, accomplish huge daily tasks or make heavy decisions. • Ego as an asset • Ego is a powerful tool for someone who needs to lead others, accomplish huge daily tasks or make heavy decisions.

  11. Ego – an evil or… • Finally it can be divided as- • Id-Ego : The one which makes U and others Happy ( Good Ego). • Self – Esteem : • Super – Ego ( Which is nothing but Inferiority Complex) The Over-Inflated Ego

  12. Ego – an evil or… • And Now, the Scientific Proof of ESP: • November 18, 2010 by Lin Edwards (PhysOrg.com) -- A Cornell University scientist has demonstrated that psi anomalies, more commonly known as precognition, premonitions or extra-sensory perception (ESP), really do exist at a statistically significant level. Psi anomalies are defined as "anomalous processes of information or energy transfer that are currently unexplained in terms of known physical or biological mechanisms." • How to Summarize Ego ? Well, in summary, more important are 3 types of Egos – Id Ego : It makes everybody happy who are of any concern to U but doesn’t heart even those who do not matter e.g.; Some one close tops in any walk of life, U become upbeat as if it is Ur own achievement. Self – esteem : Very essential for all round development but very dangerous at the same time if it clashes with others’ interests and doesn’t hesitate to hurt them. Super – Ego: In fact it is nothing but inferiority complex which compels U to judge Urself better than others by finding their faults and not that of Urs.
