  3. 1. She was an individualist when she went against what everyone else did. 2. The KKK is a harmful conspiracy. 3. Dusty has a strong aversion to Cathedral. 4. Parents should try to teach integrity to their kids. 5. Adam is a nonconformist because he disagrees with others about politics. 6. Wearing underwear is not superfluous. 7. Some people whine incessantly about other students.

  4. Aphorisms- short statements that express a wise or clever observation about lifeExamples? Brainstorm and try to write one down in your notebook under this definition.

  5. Read the aphorisms on 222.

  6. Individualism- the pursuit of the individual rather than common/collective interests • Nonconformist- failure or refusal to agree with established customs, attitudes, or ideas

  7. Brainstorm • In a word web, write down word associations that you have when you hear the term “self-reliance.” • What comes to mind?

  8. Read • Self-Reliance  pages 224-225 • You are responsible for filling out the worksheet after you have read. This should be INDEPENDENT, as it is your opinions. Rely on yourself as you reflect!

  9. “To be great is to be misunderstood” • What does this mean? • Who are some people you can think of who were/are great but are misunderstood? • How have these people been treated because they were misunderstood? • Research two of the people on your list, and on the bottom of your worksheet, write down who they were and how they were “misunderstood.” • How is your generation “misunderstood”?
