  2. The Graces-Goddesses of joy beauty, charm, happiness, and feasts. The three Graces are, -Euphrosyne(Mirth), Thalia(good cheer), Aglaia(splendor). Also known as Charites. -Other names The Graces go by are Charities or Gratiae .

  4. The Graces- Family Relations • Father- Zeus or Helius. • Mother- Eurynome or Aegle.

  5. The Graces: 3 Fun Facts • The Graces are known for singing and dancing for the gods. • They were usually depicted as women dancing merrily with nymphs. • They often dance with the Muses to Apollo's playing.

  6. The Moirae (The Fates)-The three fates controlled the destiny of men and women The names of the 3 fates are: - Clotho (Nona), the spinner. - Lachesis (Decuma), the measurer - and Atropos (Morta), the web cutter.

  8. The Moirae (The Fates)-Myth • The Fates were the spinners of the thread of life. They determined the span of human life of every mortal from birth to death. No other god had the right to alter their decisions. The Fates were in charge of destiny. No human could blame the fates, since there were times he was the only one responsible for his failures.

  10. The Moirae (The Fates)-Fun Facts • The Fates assign a man to good or evil and decide how long their lives will be. • It is possible that they determine the fate of the gods also. • No one should mess with The Fates or try to fool them.

  11. King Midas One day, Silenus, leader of the satyrs, became intoxicated and passed out in King Midas’ beloved rose garden. Peasants found him and brought him to King Midas. Because Midas knew Silenus, he took care of him for 5 days and nights. The father of Silenus, Dionysus, decided to reward Midas for taking care of his son and granted him one wish. King Midas wished that everything he touched turned to gold. After accidently killing his daughter, Midas became unhappy with his gift, so he went to Dionysus and asked how to get rid of the gift. Dionysus told him he had to go to the Pactolus River and wash away the gift. Midas did this right away and then, the gift was gone.

  15. Pandora Pandora was created so she would be the first women on earth. One day, Prometheus stole fire from heaven. To punish him, Zeus took Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother, so they could be together. As a wedding gift, Zeus gave Pandora a jar. It was not to opened under any circumstance. Well, Pandora opened the jar anyway, and all evil inside got out and spread over the earth. The only thing left in the jar was hope.

  19. Narcissus & Echo Narcissus was a young man who was deeply in love with his reflection in a pool. Many girls wanted to marry him, including Echo. Echo fell in love with him, but couldn’t express her love. She couldn’t express it because she had been condemned by Pan only to repeat the words of others. Echo and Narcissus both died by the pool. Narcissus died due to excessive love for himself and Echo just wasted her life away at the pool.

  20. Narcissus & Echo • Family- Cephissus and Liriope are Narcissus’ parents. • Modern Reference- Today, both Narcissus and Echo are common words. Narcissus transformed into narcissistic, which means having an odd fascination with yourself. Echo is still echo but it means a repetition of sound.

The Muses • Goddess’ of Human Inspirations • Roman name: Pierides • Symbol: There is no symbol but they had offerings (milk, honey, cakes of grain.) • The Muses were: Calliope(epic poetry), Clio (history), Erato(lyric or poetry of love), Euterpe (flute), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (mime), Terpsichiore (dance), Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy).

  24. The Muses • The Muses were best know as being singers and dancers at the parties held by the gods, and were inspiration of poetry, music, and dance. • Family: Zeus(father), Mnemosyne(mother), Orpheus(child)

  25. The Muses • Myth: A singer/poet named, Thamyris, challenged the Muses. He mocked and made fun of their skills. For his jokes, Thamyris was maimed and lost his memory. He could no longer remember his songs or his poems. The Muses can give the gift of talent and insight but they can also revoke their blessings.

  28. Achilles • Achilles wasn’t exactly a god while alive. He was a demi-god/half-blood. He became a god after his death. • There’s no Roman name for his but his other names are Pelides and Aeacides. • Some websites say that Achilles symbol is a shield and others say he has no symbol at all/

  29. Achilles • Family: Son of Nymph Thetis(father) and Peleus (mortal mother), Dieidamia(wife), Neotolemus(child.) • Fun Facts: He was the king of Mymidons. His parents tried to make him immortal twice during his infancy. He was killed by an arrow to his heel, which was the only vulnerable part of his body.

  30. Achilles • Myth- Achilles died from a wound to his heel. Paris (or Alexander) shot an arrow to his heel during war. Since that was the only vulnerable part of Achilles’ body, he died from that wound. • Modern Day Relation: There is a plastic manufacturing company called Achilles Corporation. http://www.achillesusa.com/ • Another relation is the Achilles tendon. It is 400 muscles in the lower part of a leg.

  32. Tieresias • Tieresias was not a god • No Roman name or symbol • Family: Everes(father) and Nymph Chariclo(mother.)

  33. Tieresias • Myth: Zeus and Hera were once arguing. To determine who was right they consulted Tieresias since he was once both sexes. Tieresias sided with Zeus and Hera was very angry. She was so angry that she struck Tieresias blind. Since Zeus couldn’t undo the act he gave Tieresias the gift of prophecy in compensation. • Another myth of him becoming blind: Tieresias accidentally saw Athena blind. She covered his eyes, and that left him blind. Tieresias asked Athena to restore his sight but she couldn’t so she gave him the gift of prophecy in compensation.
