Cervantes' Life1547-1616 • 1547 - Born in Alcalá de Henares near Madrid • 1569 - in Rome as valet to Monsignor Acquaviva. • 1571 - fights at the battle of Lepanto • 1575 - on his way back to Spain is captured and held prisoner in Algiers • 1580 - after 4 attempts to escape he is set free • 1592 – while he is an administrator for the Invincible Armada he is arrested for the illegal sale of wheat. • 1593 - he works as a tax collector • 1594 - he ends up in jail again. • 1605 - El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha is published in Madrid • 1616 - he dies the same day as Shakespeare
