Of banannas and gender • In Bananna Musey (Chad), nouns are either masculine or feminine (kind of like Spanish and French). • If I give you a word, will you be able to tell what gender it is just by looking at the ending? • Masculine: • -tlekŋa, njeffã, mullã, ngussã, dlemma, galapma, sukŋa, galaŋŋa • Feminine endings: (not a complete list) • goloŋga, kalamba, tlakka, dugulla, ussa, fatta, vunda, diffa, happa • Problem: Do you really have to memorize each word? • What gender is the word dina (‘dog’)? What about cara (‘woman’)?
