  2. The Beginning • Born on August 24, 1634 • Born in Yarmouth , Norfolk, England

  3. Childhood/Family Life • Daughter of William Towne and Joanna Blessing • One of eight children • One sister included Rebecca Nurse (also accused of Witchcraft) • Moved to America around 1640 with family

  4. As an Adult.. Married Isaac Easty in 1655 Had seven children Owned a valuable farm in Salem with husband Resident of Topsfield, village North of Salem

  5. Education • There is very little found on her education and school life

  6. Career • There is very little found on her career • Wasmostly a stay at home mother that took care of the household duties and herchildren

  7. Religious Practices • Very religious women • Dignified demeanor fit strict Puritan mold • Held appropriate cultural behavior

  8. Involvement in Salem Witch Hysteria • April 1692- accused of witchcraft • This shocked the village because she was not a social outcast/outspoken women who may have offended the villagers • Thought accusation maybe inspired by envy (due to their valuable farm) or because she was a target after her sister (Rebecca Nurse) was convicted= guilty by association • During examination- very calm and respectful yet because the afflicted girls 'cries were insistent, was sent to prison • Was set free a few days later, but Mercy Lewis cried out that Mary’s apparition was strangling her • Her fit was so severe, so Mary was put back into jail

Salem Witch Hysteria Continued.. • Magistrate John Hathorne aggressively questioned her to try to lead her to a confession • September 9- was tried and condemned despite her plea: “I never complied, but prayed against [Satan] all my days … I will say it, if it was my last time, I am clear of this sin.” • Before execution, wrote a letter to the judges asking that “no more innocent blood be shed.” • Letter raised sympathy and doubt in Salem Village, but didn’t prevent the last round of hangings

  10. Death • After trial=found guilty of practicing Witchcraft • Carted to Gallows Hill among others where she was hanged • Died on September 22, 1692 • Only 68 years old
