Eemaldumine romantismist • Pärast 1830. aasta revolutsiooni Prantsusmaal leidis romantism üha enam ametlikku tunnustust • Sõltumatud kunstnikud loobusid väljamõeldud, fantastilistest ja põnevatest motiividest • Hakati maalima ainult seda, mida nähti enda ümber • Tähtsaimaks peeti tegelikkuse asjalikku ja ilustamata esitamist • Teaduste areng oli tormiline – kunstnike tõearmastus väljendas nende solidaarsust teadusega • Uuendusmeelsed haritlased lootsid, et tõde aitab ühiskonda paremaks muuta ja seepärast peavad nii teadused kuikunstid üheskoos tõde teenima
