  1. Note Taking Made Easy! This is an example of one type of note taking system.

  2. NovaNET® & Note Taking • Do you have students who… • don’t take notes? • won’t take notes? • can’t find their notes? • take notes but can’t use them due to illegibility or disorganization?

  3. NovaNET® & Note Taking • Why is note taking important for students? • Helps them to retain what is learned • Helps them in post tests • Helps them transfer what they’ve learned for other courses • Helps them to organize their thinking

  4. Good note taking saves time and effort!

  5. NovaNET® & Note Taking Common student excuses for NOT taking notes…

  6. NovaNET® & Note Taking • I have a photographic memory • It’s all “up here” • I’ve never needed notes before • I can’t find my notes when I need them • Notes haven’t helped me yet

  7. NovaNET® & Note Taking Why do students “lose” their notes?

  8. NovaNET® & Note Taking • Many students attempt to take notes • They want to comply with teacher expectations, but… • Their notes have little or no meaning to them • They don’t know how to organize their thoughts into notes • They don’t see the value in taking notes

  9. The Cornell System of Note Taking This is one of many note taking systems

  10. NovaNET® & Note Taking • The Cornell System of Note Taking • Developed by Dr. Walter Pauk at Cornell University • Been around for more than 40 years • Just one of many note taking systems • Seems to be a good fit for students working in NovaNET®

  11. The Cornell System is easy as 1-2-3 1. • Details • Key Words • Summary 2. 3.

  12. The Cornell System • Details – This is where students write information from the lessons. • Key Words – This is where students write words to look up, formulas, etc. • Summary – This is where students write a one sentence summary of what’s on the page in the details section. Sometimes 2 & 3 become blurred to students. That’s fine if they do 3!

  13. NovaNET® & Note Taking NovaNET® lessons help teachers coach students in effective note taking skills

  14. NovaNET® & Note Taking • Student Notebooks and Note Taking • Explain guidelines of grading notebooks to students • On top of every page students write: date, course title, lesson title • Only notes from NovaNET® lessons may be written in the notebook • All pages must be left in the notebook • Notebooks must remain in the classroom/lab

  15. NovaNET® & Note Taking Grading the Student Notebook/Notes • Give a weekly score recorded in the cover. • Start with 100 points (weekly) and deduct 5 points for each of the following occurrences… • Writing in the notebook not related to lessons • Tearing out pages • Taking the notebook out of class/lab without permission • Not taking notes while signed in and working on lessons for each day that week • Average all weeks together for one score. • This may be part of the grade for the credit.

  16. Teaching students to take notes • Read the introduction – What are the objectives for this lesson? • Pay attention to boldface, headings, and subheadings. • Pay attention to graphics - charts, maps, diagrams, etc. • Look for big signals that say IMPORTANT italics bold face print chapter objectives end-of-lesson questions

  17. The most difficult skill to teach • Recognize what is NOT important • Not everything is of equal value • Don’t just copy the screen into the notes

  18. NovaNET® & Note Taking NovaNET® lessons help students take notes they can use Guided Practice…
