  1. HAS GOD SPOKEN? The Need for Revelation

  2. REVELATION IS NEEDED! • Without it man could never know: • God’s Character • Where Evil Came From • Man’s Origin • Man’s Purpose • Man’s Destiny

  3. REVELATION IS NEEDED! • Man faces crucial religious questions: • In whom or what am I to believe? • Have I sinned, broken God’s law? • What, if anything, can I do to escape the consequences of sin? • What sort of life should I live? • Must one obey God’s will? • What will happen if I do not obey?

  4. REVELATION IS NEEDED! “Had God chosen not to reveal Himself, man could never have known Him. And man can never know more about God than God chooses to disclose… Whatever knowledge of God is available today, exists solely because God has chosen to make it known.” Harold Lindsell, Christianity Today, 1976

  5. HOW HAS GOD SPOKEN? HEB. 1:1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets... • Directly, with a voice. • To Adam, GEN. 3:9 • To Cain, GEN. 4:10 • To Abraham, GEN. 12:1-3 • To Isaiah, ISA. 38:4-5

  6. HOW HAS GOD SPOKEN? • With His “fingers” • To Belshazzar, DAN. 5:5 • Ten commandments, EX. 31:18 • With action, indicating His power • Burning bush, EX. 3:2 • Daniel in lion’s den, DAN. 6:22 • Veil of temple torn, MATT. 27:51

  7. HOW HAS GOD SPOKEN? • With dreams and visions • To Jacob, GEN. 46:2-3 • To Joseph, MATT. 1:20 • To Peter, ACTS 10:10-15 • Through prophets • Jeremiah, JER. 1:9 • Ezekiel, EZE. 3:11

  8. HOWDOES GOD SPEAKTODAY? HEB. 1:2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds... “Has spoken” = ελαλησεν= elalesen Aorist tense indicates “He hasspoken and is finished speaking”

  9. HOWDOES GOD SPEAKTODAY? • God’s revelation, EPH. 3:4 • God’s FULL revelation, JN. 16:13 • God’s FINAL revelation, JUDE 3 • God’s authoritative revelation, 2 COR. 5:7 • God’s all-sufficient revelation, 2 PET. 1:3 • God’s judgmental revelation, JN. 12:48

  10. BIBLE IS FROM GOD INDEED • No doubt that the Bible exists • Man incapable of producing it 2 PET. 1:20-21

  11. BIBLE IS FROM GOD INDEED 2 PETER 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, (21) for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. From phero, “moved as a gust of wind” blowing the sails of a ship (Thayer).

  12. BIBLE IS FROM GOD INDEED • No doubt that the Bible exists • Man incapable of producing it 2 PET. 1:20-21 • Therefore, God revealed it to man • The Bible was inspired by God 2 TIM. 3:16-17

  13. BIBLE IS FROM GOD INDEED Since the Bible makes us complete, we DO NOT need: catechisms, manuals, creeds, synods, or conventions 2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. From theopneustos, meaning “God-breathed” (Thayer)

  14. MAN UNABLE TO WRITE IT “The nature and contents of the Bible are such that the rank and file of its readers in all generations of logical thinkers have recognized God as its author. Man would not have written such a book if he could; and could not, if he wanted. It moves on a superhuman plane in design,…

  15. MAN UNABLE TO WRITE IT “…in nature, and in teaching. It caters not to worldly desire and ambition. It condemns much which men in the flesh highly prize, and commends much which they despise. Its thoughts are not the thoughts of men.” B.C. Goodpasture, Gospel Advocate, 1970

  16. NO OTHER LIKE THE BIBLE • For comforting the distressed • For encouragement of good • For conviction of sin • For living wisely • For confidence in dying • For unshakeable hope

  17. NO OTHER LIKE THE BIBLE • Can know the future with it • Can know danger with it • Can prepare for eternity with it • Can know ourselves with it • Can know God with it • Can please God by obeying it

  18. JESUS NEEDED SCRIPTURES MATTHEW 4:4 But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

  19. WE NEED THE SCRIPTURES JAS 1:18 “Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.” 1 PET. 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever

  20. GOD HAS SPOKEN TO YOU THROUGH HIS WORD Are you listening? 1 SAM. 3:10 And Samuel answered, "Speak, for Your servant hears"

  21. I MUST NOT TRUST MY FEELINGS • We sometimes rely on how we feel, think, our emotions, etc. • His ways and thoughts are not ours. Isa. 55:8- 9 “My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

  22. I MUST NOT TRUST MY FEELINGS • We can be misled by human emotion and reasoning. • Consider Saul of Tarsus. • The apostle began as a persecutor. • 1 Tim. 1:12-13 • Why? He thought it was the right thing to do. • Acts 26:9 • We must set aside our own thoughts and feelings

  23. MY FAMILY CANNOT BE MY STANDARD • Family is important. • But family cannot take priority over the Lord. Matt. 10:34-37 - v. 37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”

  24. MY FAMILY CANNOT BE MY STANDARD • Family is important. • But family cannot take priority over the Lord. Matt. 10:34-37 • Our faith can be tested by differences with family. • Family can be mistaken • God’s Word is never mistaken

  25. I MUST BE WILLING TO QUESTION TRADITIONS • Why do you do the things you do? Believe the things you believe? • “We’ve always done it this way.” • Traditions are not necessarily bad. • But hear Jesus’ warning. Mark 7:1-13 • “You reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition….making the word of God of no effect through your tradition.”

  26. THE BIBLE • God’s revelation, EPH. 3:4 • God’s FULL revelation, JN. 16:13 • God’s FINAL revelation, JUDE 3 • God’s authoritative revelation, 2 COR. 5:7 • God’s all-sufficient revelation, 2 PET. 1:3 • God’s judgmental revelation, JN. 12:48

  27. WILL YOU OBEY TODAY? • HEAR the gospel. • BELIEVE the gospel. • REPENT of sin. • CONFESS faith in Christ. • BE BAPTIZED to wash away sin. • BE FAITHFUL unto death.
