  1. The Major Uses of Robotics Honors Project Brandon Zimmerman

  2. Outline The major uses of robotics covered in this presentation are: • Industrial/Commercial Production • Bomb Disposal • Humanoid Robots • Surgery • Entertainment • Play-toys for children

  3. Industrial Robots • Industrial Robots are used to do the following tasks • Welding • Painting • Ironing • Assembly • Pick and place • Palletizing • Product Inspection • Testing • Every industrial task that can be completed by a human can be completed by a robot. • All tasks completed by these robots are performed with very high precision and speed.

  4. Bomb Disposal • Greatly minimizes human casualties • The US Army and Israeli Defense Forces both have bomb disposing robots • This technology is being used in 25 countries

  5. Humanoids with Artificial Intelligence • Recently there has been much done in the area of creating life-like robots that can emulate humans. • Shown on the right is Honda’s Asimo. • Asimo can recognize moving objects, postures and gestures, it’s environment, distinguish sounds, and perform facial recognition. • Honda wants Asimo to be able to help people in their daily lives.

  6. Humanoids with Artificial Intelligence (continued) • The aim for these robots is to have them perform day-to-day tasks that people simply do not want to do such as: • Take out the trash • Wash the dishes • Take the dog for a walk • Serve food and drinks • Cook food

  7. Robotic Surgery • This type of surgery can be performed either completely automatically or under the direction of a surgeon • Robotic Surgery has the potential to be more precise then a human surgeon could ever be • Some have expressed a great fear of having an operation performed on them by a robot, but as robotic surgery became more popular the fear would die out • The first unmanned surgery was performed in Italy on May 2, 2006

  8. Entertainment • From 2000 to 2002 a show appeared on Comedy Central called BattleBots • In this show people would build robots that could destroy robots built by their competitors • BattleBots was a great success and many were very sad to see it go off the air • The show got many people interested in robotics, adults and children alike

  9. Play-toys for kids • Looking in any store today you will find many robots for sale • One of these robots may provide hours of joy for children • Most robotic toys are priced between $100-$200
