  2. Violence in the Workplace • Violence: a threat or assault on an individual which has the intention or results in physical and/or psychological damage. • Workplace: any location where the employee is to complete the requirements of his/her job assignments.

  3. Sources of Workplace Violence • Reportable act – any violence, threat, or other aggressive behavior. You never know when a threat might turn into an act of violence. • What you consider reportable someone else may not, but if you feel threatened you should report it: • By strangers, vendors, contractors, clients • By students • By co-workers • By personal relations

  4. Effects of Workplace Violence • Physical injuries • Psychological/emotional damage • Interruption in business • Increased costs • Medical costs • Increased security • Training new employees • Damaged public image

  5. Risk Factors & Preventive Measures • Working alone or during low staffing/peak hours • Implement a “buddy system” - do not work alone • Be aware of surroundings - know the exits • Move vehicles closer if working late • Leave with your keys in your hand • Request UPD to provide an escort if necessary • Unsecured workplace • Secure workplace daily • Restrict access to the public

Preventing Workplace Violence • Heighten awareness on workplace violence • ULM Disaster Plan (www.ulm.edu/safety) • FirstCall Interactive Network (www.ulm.edu/ens) • Identify High Risk Environments • Police Officers • Employees with Financial Responsibilities • Maintain means of communication • Report all incidents of workplace violence (Threats are considered an incident) • Inform Human Resources, your supervisor, and UPD of all restraining orders.

Warning Signs!What to look for . . . • Resists change • Defensiveness • Emotional outbursts • Easily frustrated • Feelings of rejection • Challenges authority • Verbal threats • Threatening actions • Interest in weapons • Low self-esteem • Low productivity • Increased absenteeism • Chemical dependency • Lacks empathy • Obsessive behavior • Self-destructive behavior • Social withdrawal • Depression/isolation

  8. Resolving Workplace Conflicts Reduce an already intense situation: • Do not get physical • Do not over-react • Do not take challenges • Watch what you say non-verbally • Be a good listener • Find out what is really being said • Give them space • Use consequences, NOT threats

  9. Workplace Violence Occurrences REPORT THE INCIDENT IMMEDIATELY! • Seek medical attention for injuries • Contact University Police x5350 • UPD will thoroughly investigate incident • UPD will take written statements from all involved • UPD will take pictures when required
