  1. 8-1 Adding and subtracting polynomials Brand new paper/notebook for NOTES!

  2. Vocabulary • Term: Numbers and/or variables. • They are separated by +/-. • Monomial = 1 term • 2x • Binomial = 2 terms • 2x + 5 • Trinomial = 3 terms • 2x2 + 5x – 8 • Polynomial = many terms • 3x5 + 4x2 – 5x + 10

  3. Degree of a Monomial • Add together all the exponents of the variables 3x4 Degree: 4 -t Degree: 1 xy2z2 Degree: 5 23 Degree: 0 (there are no variables) 1 1

  4. Degree of a Polynomial • Highest exponentof a variable 4x3 +2x – 1 Degree: 3 -t + 4t Degree: 2 -2x + 3x + 4 Degree: 4 5t Degree: 1 (there are no variables) 4 1 2

  5. Vocabulary • Constant = Just a number • 2x + 5 • Variable = Letter • 2x + 5 • Coefficient = Number in front of a variable • 2x + 5 • Combine Like Terms = +/- terms with the EXACT same variables/exponents. Only add coefficient!

  6. EXAMPLE 1:Classifying Polynomials

  7. Standard Form • Write the terms in descending degree order, from the biggest exponent to the smallest. Make sure to simplify EXAMPLE 2: Write each polynomial in standard form. What is the name of the polynomial based on its degree and number of terms? 5x3 + 11x – 1 Cubic Trinomial 4x2 + 3x Quadratic Binomial

  8. EXAMPLE 3:ADDITION (4X2 + 5X – 1) + (6X2 – 3X – 4) Method 1: Combine Like Terms Method 2: Like Elimination (stack) 4x2 + 5x – 1 + 6x2 – 3x – 4 10x2 + 2x – 5 4x2 + 5x – 1 + 6x2 – 3x – 4 10x2 + 2x – 5

  9. EXAMPLE 4:SUBTRACTION(X2 – 6X + 5) – (3X2 – 5X + 6) Method 1 Method 2 x2 – 6x + 5 – 3x2+ 5x – 6 -2x2 – x – 1 x2 – 6x + 5 + -3x2+ 5x – 6 -2x2 – x – 1 **DISTRIBUTE NEGATIVE TO 2NDPOLYNOMIAL**
