  3. Kawat : Introduction -Demography • Population( 2001) • Total :170524 • Tribal :157738 • Percentage of ST Population:92.5 • No of BPL Families: • Total:10380 • Percentage:31.6(of total HHs) • ST BPL :9792 • Percentage: 94.33% (of total BPL HHs) • No of BPL HHs Having Land:7181

  4. Kawat : Introduction- Human Dev Parameters • No of Houseless Families/ families with Muddy Huts:195 • Literacy Rate:33.35% • Female Literacy Rate: 20% • Percentage of Marginal Workers: 11.32 • No of Migrant Families:6276 • Percentage of Ag laborers: 7.5( of total population)

  7. Kawat : Reasons of Backwardness • No benefit of river Narmada • No Drinking Water facility other than Hand pump in 80% villages • Subsistence agriculture • Small Land Holding • Rain fed Agriculture • Inadequate rainfall

Kawat : Reasons of Backwardness • Government programmes run by TSP/ DRDA could not make impact • Individual based • Absence of Perspective Community plan for ling period • Nature of intervention • Limited to the age of asset • After Depletion of Forest, Main source of livelihood washed away • alternatives not available • Forest Department became hurdle

Kawat : Reasons of Backwardness • Dependence on NGOs for Development • Had Profit Motive • Absence of local NGO • Attitude of the Local tribe • Women involved in economic activity • Men feel it below dignity to work • Development programmes were aim for men • Did not cater to the socioeconomic reality

Kawat : Reasons of Backwardness • Education • Low literacy rate • Ashramshalas closed • no alternative provision developed • Inadequate number of higher secondary school • Education not employment oriented • Children were removed from economic activity and sent to schools • No alternative source of earning was available after education

  11. Opportunities • Integrated Dairy Development Project • with Baroda Dairy • Total Cost: Rs 33.43Cr • GoG Grant: Rs 19.89Cr • Intuitional Credit: Rs 11.36Crs • Dairy/ Participant Contribution:2.47 • No of HH to be Covered:5000

Opportunities… • Drinking Water • Narmada (Hafeshwar) based Water Supply Scheme • Cost: Rs 90 Cr • Coverage of 123 Village • by GWSSB • Water supply to each Household proposed • Cost-Rs 80 Cr proposed by TDD • Electrification –of each Household under Central /State Grant by GEB • Kadipani/ Hafeshwar: Small Hamlets- Problem in coverage for Electricity

Strategies • Health & Sanitation • Cherrnjeevi Scheme for APL Tribal Families • Construction of Anganwadi in remaining villages • Individual Toilets under Total Sanitation Campaign • Agriculture • Improvement of Irrigation Tankss • Lift Irrigation Schemes • Horticulture based – 500 acre for Vadi Project

Strategies • Education: planning in package • Primary education to everyone • After Class 7 – intervention by Pvt Sector or Government for further schooling • Government Higher Secondary School • within radius of 8-10 Kms • Residential Science Schools at Taluka • Professional Education: establishing ITI, Polytechnic & Engineering colleges at Taluka level

  16. Strategies • Improvement in TSP • Long term Sectoral Perspective Planning • Improvement in Communication • Road Network • Construction of small bridges & Culverts • Construction of Small & Medium size Check Dams • Promotion of local-art & Craft based enterprises.

Challenges • Regularization of forest land within timeframe • Severe Problem of Drinking Water • Lower Water Table-Failure of Hand pumps • Welfare of Migrant Labrours, especially for their health & children education at work place • Establishing Agriculture marketing Network • Exploitation of tourism potential of Kadipani & Hafeshwar- Narmada river • Strengthning of SHGs under Shakti Samanvay • Motivation to leave orthodoxy & Superstition
