Real-Time Remote Control of Scanning Electron Microscope for K12, Undergraduate, and Graduate Teaching

The John F. Mansfield North Campus Electron Microbeam Analysis Laboratory at the University of Michigan offers real-time remote control of a scanning electron microscope for teaching purposes. This allows for the use of SEM in larger undergraduate classes and lecture demonstrations, where limited physical space restricts the number of viewers. Training can be conducted one-on-one or in groups of 10 to 100+. Remote control of the SEM is also possible across an ISDN connection.

  2. Rationale: Why SEM Remote Control?Want to use SEM in MS&E undergraduate labs & lecture demonstrations. Problems: MS&E undergraduate classes number ~40 at UM. Limited space in SEM labs usually means only two or three people can view screen at any one time. Teaching students to actually use a standard SEM in this environment is not practical. Lecture demonstrations to large classes (≥100 people) completely impractical.
