  1. Prevention Strategies • The Facility can prevent abuse and neglect by : • Educating staff, residents and families about abuse, neglect and concerns. • Observing resident staff interaction. • Encouraging and supporting the reporting of suspected abuse, neglect and concerns. • Investigating ALL reports of abuse, neglect and concerns.

  2. Education • Emphasize that ALL employees at our facility are MANDATED reporters. • Begin abuse and neglect education at orientation. • Mandatory inservice (100% compliance) on abuse and neglect education. • Educate families and residents on Bill of Rights, Ombudsman information and location of literature.

  3. Observation • Management involved in day-to-day resident/employee routine (hands-on dining, lead activities). • Observation audits that address procedures to include customer service. • Family and resident interviews-”How are things going?”

  4. Reporting • Make staff feel comfortable coming forward with allegations of abuse, neglect or concerns, even in the face of peer pressure. • ANYONE can file a “concern” report on behalf of a resident, family or visitor. • All claims of abuse, neglect, and concerns are taken seriously. • Advise all parties on protection of retaliation and individual’s right to confidentiality.

  5. Investigating • Provide for the immediate safety of the resident!-call law enforcement if criminal in nature. • Communicate incident to supervisor and administration immediately. • All persons on the floor at the time of the allegations MUST be interviewed. • Staff need to write statements • Take suspected employee(s) to a non-care area and obtain written statement(s) • Suspend suspected employee(s) pending outcome of the investigation.
