Teaching • Didasko – to give instruction or to teach • Didaskalos – teacher, an instructor, master • Jesus: taught in the synagogues, in the temple, from a boat or shore and in towns • He taught with authority Mark 11:22 • His authority came from the Word of God • He taught the Old Testament • He gave a warning Matt. 5:17 • John 14 His words were from the Father

  3. Apostles and Teaching • Jesus commanded them to make disciples and teach the Word of God Matt. 28:19-20 • The apostles taught Jesus as the Christ • Paul taught Jews and especially Gentiles • Priscilla and Aquila taught Apollosthe way of God more accurately

Warnings that come with teaching • James 3:1 Not many should become teachers • Teachers will be held accountable • I Tim. 6:3-5 Warning of teaching false doctrines and corrupt men • Titus 1 Teachers are only to teach the Word of God which refutes those who oppose it. • Teaching the Word will require much time in the study of The Word.

  5. Believer’s responsibility • The Holy Spirit teaches all believers John 14:26 • His anointing abides within all believers • I John 2:27 His anointing teaches all believers • All believers are to study and share the Word with others • Teachers primarily and consistently minister to the body by teaching.

  6. Exhortation • Parakaleo – to call, to call near to one’s side • One who urges another to pursue a course of conduct. They have the ability to effectively encourage or comfort another and to motivate him or her to a walk of obedience • Admonition or encouragement for the believer in the purpose of strengthening and establishing the believer in the truth. Zod.

  7. Exhortation and the Holy Spirit • John 14:16 “Helper” – parakletos, another of the same kind, of equal equality. One who comes forward in behalf of and as the representative of another. • “The Holy Spirit undertakes Christ’s office in the world while Christ is not in the world as the God-Man in bodily form.” Zod. • The Holy Spirit gives the ability to obey the Word of God and motivates us to live a holy life.

  8. Examples in the Word • Jesus: Advocate – parakletos – called to one’s aid I John 2:1. He aids as our advocate with the Father when we sin • Barnabas: Acts 4 “Son of encouragement or consolation”. He came alongside John Mark and Paul • Paul: Acts 13 Gave an exhortation to the synagogue officials

Examples of Exhortations • Acts 13 Paul goes through Jewish history and preaches Christ, then warns them to believe • Heb. 13:22 Warning not to take the discipline of the Lord lightly • Acts 14:22 Remain true to the faith • I and 11 Thess. Warnings to work in a quiet fashion; eat your own bread • Judas and Silas in I Cor. 14:3 Everyone who prophesies speaks to: strengthen, encourage and comfort

  10. Examples of Exhortations • Peter: I Peter 5:1-2 Be Saved! Shepherd the flock • Timothy: I Tim. 6:2 and 2 Tim. 4:2 Use great patience and instruction, exhort with the Word • Correct, rebuke and encourage • Exhortation is the supernatural ability that enables them to motivate others to live lives according to what the commands of Scripture are.
