  1. Acts 17 When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead.

  2. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ,” he said. 4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and not a few prominent women.

  3. 1 Thessalonians 4 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified:

  4. A Reasonable FaithActs 17 & 1 Thessalonians Faith is reasonable When faith is unreasonable, it is not faith – it is a pipe dream As the Apostle Paul continues his travels he reasons with those who will listen

  6. 10 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

  7. 16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.

  8. 18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.”

  9. 19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we want to know what they mean.”

  10. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. 34 A few men became followers of Paul and believed.

  11. In Thessalonica Paul reasoned, explained and tried to prove In Berea he made the scriptures available to them and they examined the scriptures In Athens Paul reasoned, disputed, taught and made a local connection with the “unknown god”

  12. Paul had to escape Thessalonica because a mob caused a riot He left before he wanted to Yet the church survived And Paul praises them for their work in the Lord

  13. 1 Thessalonians 1 2 We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. 3 We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  14. You heard and you believed! This simple statement is not simple at all; it is a theological statement It is an affirmation that the Thessalonians understood salvation is by faith and not by works

  15. 1 Thessalonians 2 13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

  16. Because Paul could not stay there… He sent Timothy to teach them, encourage them and help them

  17. 1 Thessalonians 3 So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. 2 We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God’s fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, 3 so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them.

  18. Paul reminds them that he had instructed them

  19. 1 Thessalonians 4 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

  20. 3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

  21. 11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you…

  22. 13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

  23. 1 Thessalonians 5 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly…

  24. 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

  25. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

  26. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

  27. Be holy means… Avoid sexual immorality Love each other Lead a quiet life Mind your own business Work – do not be idle Know that we will experience resurrection Jesus will return at an unexpected hour Respect those who work for the church Do not pay evil for evil By the way: Educate the whole church

  28. Putting it all together Faith must be reasonable For Paul if faith is not logical it is useless Faith makes sense It can be explained If it cannot be explained, it is not faith There should be evidence

  29. Putting it all together We need to know what we believe When we know the logic of our faith we truly own it We do not have to be experts… We should know the basics

  30. Putting it all together We should be able to act on our faith If our faith is functional we can live by it We are saved by grace because of the price Jesus paid on the cross… We are called to strive to be holy out of gratitude for the work Christ completed on our behalf

  31. We live by faith A logical faith A useful faith A reasonable faith A faith that is living, active and functional

  32. We are the Federated Church. Our Mission is to… Seek Christ, Serve Christ andShare Christ.
