  2. History and Background - Born in 384 B.C.E. in the city of Stagira in Greece.- At the age of 17, he moved to Athens to study at Plato’s Academy. It was one of the most prestigious schools at the time. It was there that Plato become Aristotle’s mentor.- Previous to the year 343, Aristotle had developed a strong friendship with King Philip of Macedon so during this year he asked Aristotle to tutor his teenage son, Alexander, who would later go on to become Alexander the Great.

  3. Category of Philosophy - Believed in natural law which is an ethical belief that is essential in human nature and is discovered by reason.- Focused on Teleological ethics which meant having to do with the design and purpose of something.

  4. Views on Law (Contributions) - The core of his ethics is political intent.- Talked about how happiness is the aim of the good.- His ethics state that human life is shaped to its full extent in the context of a community.

  5. Views on Law (Viewpoints) - The three key points from his ethical theory is the pursuit of happiness, human excellence and the mean.- Ethics aims to discover what is good for us as human beings, what permits us to reach our potential and what we intended to be.- Describes the good as someone doing good within the community, being moderate in all things, living well and using rational behaviour.

  6. Views on Law (Influence) - Many of Aristotle’s teachings branch off from Plato.- Aristotle although disagreed with Plato in terms of emphasis on the supremacy of observation and reality.- Both Aristotle and Plato based there means of ethics from Socrates.

  7. Views on Law (Role and Who Should Obey) - We will only find goodness in life if we abide by Aristotle’s means of good (eg. Good in community, moderate at all things, live well and rational behaviour)- By abiding by his Natural Law, it should have a very positive affect in society in terms of his teachings.- Every walk of life should seek to learn Aristotle’s principles even if it’s only one of them.- According to Aristotle, everything in life has a purpose.

Applicability of Present Day Law - The law’s of Aristotle each play a small or dominate factor in today’s law’s meaning that people should do good within the community to gain the respect of others while living a live and prosperous life while avoiding the negatives.- People should do the tasks that are typical of a human being meaning that people should abide by the rules that society has instilled upon us and it should be our jobs to help keep the norms together for future citizens.
