Movies The 1960s is well known for being prominent in historical drama, psychological horror, and comedy Some of the greatest movies in this decade include To Kill A Mocking Bird(1962), Lawrence of Arabia(1962), and Physco(1960). Some other movies include Mary Popins(1964), The Sound of Music(1965), and Bonnie and Clyde(1967)

Music • Bands: • The beach boys formed in 1961 in Hawthorne California • Their Top 40 hits include"Surfin' USA", "Surfer Girl", "Little Deuce Coupe", and"Be True to Your School.” • The Beatles were also very popular • Some of their songs include “"A Hard Day's Night“, "All My Loving“, and Blackbird.”

Music Con. • Singers: • Elvis Aaron Presley was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century • Aretha Franklin, referred to as the Queen of Soul, is known as one of the most important popularizers of the soul music genre • Stevland Hardaway Morris, known by Stevie Wonder, is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, who was blind since shortly after birth • James Joseph Brown was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and recording artist, and the originator of funk music

Books and Literature • Most literature reflected current events that affected American citizens at the time • Example: To Kill A Mocking Bird Harper Lee • Reflects the Scottsboro Trial • Many works of literature in this era won literary prizes • Example: Where the Wild Things Are • Caldecott Medal (1964) • Other popular works of literature • The Feminine Mystique • Catch-22 • One flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

  6. Fads & Fashion • The 1960s featured a number of diverse trends • In the middle of the decade, culottes, box-shaped PVC dresses and go-go boots were popular. • By 1968, the hippie look was in style • Both men and women wore frayed bell-bottomed jeans, tie-dyed shirts, headbands, and sandals

Art & Architecture • Architecture became more contemporary • Many skyscrapers and tall buildings • Art was influenced by the desire to move into a modern age • Popular art styles included: • Pop art • Kinetic abstraction • Assemblage art • Environmental art • Popular Artists included: • Andy Warhol • Alexander Cardal • Helen Frankthaler

Sports • 7’ 2’’ Basketball Star Wilt Chamberlain’s average was 50 points a game • In 1967, he led the Philadelphia 76ers and in 1972 the Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA title • He was also the only player to ever score 100 points in a single game • Muhamad Ali is became a professional boxer in 1960 • He has won many awards, such as the "National Golden Gloves Light Heavyweight Champion" in 1960, "Olympic Light Heavyweight Boxing" Gold Medal in 1960, and the "WBA Heavyweight Champion of the World" ten different times • Over his career, Ali had a 56-5 record, 37 knockouts, and 19 successful title defenses

Major Events • Aug 28, 1963- First March on Washington for Civil Rights. • Martin Luther King, Jr., delivers his "I Have A Dream" speech to the assembly of over 200,000 at the Lincoln Memorial • Nov 22, 1963- Assassination of President Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, TX • Lyndon Baines Johnson assumes the office of the presidency • Jun 10, 1964- Congress passes the Civil Rights Bill • Aug 09, 1974- President Richard M. Nixon resigns his office under the threat of impeachment for his role in the Watergate scandal. Vice President Gerald Ford assumes the presidency

Scandals“Bay of Pigs” • The Bay of Pigs Invasion -an unsuccessful action by a CIA-trained force of Cuban exiles • Tried to invade southern Cuba, with support and encouragement from the US government • They attempted to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro • The invasion was launched in April 1961 • The Cuban armed forces, trained and equipped by Eastern Bloc nations, defeated the invading combatants within three days.

Civil Rights Movement • Aimed at ending racial discrimination against African Americans and restoring voting rights to them • Acts of nonviolent protest like Sit-ins and Marches produced crisis situations between activists and government authoritiesin the U.S • During this phase of the Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which banned discrimination based on "race, color, religion, or national origin" in employment practices and public accommodations was passes. • The Voting Rights Act of 1965, which restored and protected voting rights and the and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing, was also passed • African Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to action

  16. Major Supreme Court Cases • United States v. Raines, 362 US 17 (1960) Reversed a District Court decision and determined the federal government can bring civil action against state officials for discriminating against African-Americans • Escobedo v. Illinois, 378 US 478 (1964) Held that criminal suspects have the right to representation by an attorney during interrogation, per the Sixth Amendment • Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) - Allowed for any accused individual to have the right to an attorney. Before this case, an attorney would only be provided by the state if the result of the case could be the death penalty • Civil Rights Act of 1964 - An important piece of legislation that stopped segregation and discrimination in public accommodations. Further, the U.S. Attorney General would be able to help victims of discrimination. It also forbid employers to discriminate against minorities

Protests • The Nonviolent protest march on Washington in 1963 resulted in the administration working more closely with the movement and added pressure for passage of the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965) • Riots also occurred after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. • On Sunday, May 3, Governor Rhodes held a news conference and declared a state of emergency. He stated that �we will take all necessary action to maintain order�. That night as crowds gathered on the Commons, the Ohio Riot Act was read to the students, ordering them to disperse within five minutes. Students became hostile, cursing and throwing rocks at the Guardsmen and police. Again tear gas was used in a number of instances and about fifty more arrests were made

Status of the economy • Housing and computer industry overpowered automobiles, chemicals, and electrically powered consumer durables, • Big business dominated the domestic economy during this time • Inflation was stable, corporate profits were at the highest they had ever been, and the stock market had recovered • Unemployment was still too high • By the end of the decade the average Americans real income had increased 50 percentwith help from the government

Average American Life • The average American home in the early 1960's had no air conditioning, no drying machine, one black-and-white TV, and one rotary telephone, often with a party line • Many homes only had one bathroom • Most families also had one car and the women often didn't know how to drive until the late 60's.
