  3. Short Series “Raising Children to be faithful to God” Deut. 6:4-12, 20

  4. Remember It takes both the parents and the children to accomplish their faithfulness! What about Prov. 22:6? 6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

  5. 1. Example – Show Them the Importance of the WAY • Parents must begin with themselves • “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart”

  6. 2. Teaching – Show Them the WAY • Parents must teach their children • Diligently (Deut. 6:7) • Clark defines it: “to repeat, iterate, or do a thing again and again; hence to whet or sharpen any instrument, which is done by reiterated friction or grinding”

Teaching – Show Them the WAY • Keep God and His will before them always (Deut. 6:7-9) • Use practical things • Take them out and count the stars • Talk to them about the design of the universe • Explain the purpose of suffering: Build a clay pot – smash it –ask how do you make it strong? Read 1 Pet. 1:7; Heat it! • Remind them to control tongues: Toothpaste

  8. 2. Teaching – Show Them the WAY • Deal with the problems they face • Internet • Bullies • Cheating • Language • Drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, etc. • Dating • Sex

  9. 2. Teaching – Show Them the WAY • Use current events • Political situation • Entertainers – sports, singers, movie and TV stars

Teaching – Show Them the WAY • Help them to understand, “the why” • V. 20 “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, `What [is the meaning of] the testimonies, the statutes, and the judgments which the LORD our God has commanded you?’ • Answer their Questions • Why do we go to church so much? • Who made God? • Why can’t we do what other kids do? • Why did Grandpa die?

Protection – Warn Them of the Dangers along the WAY • Deut. 6:10-12 • Internet (Eph. 5:16) • Immorality – King David (Psa. 51) • Money (1 Tim 6:6-10) • Pride – King Saul (1 Sam. 15) • Marrying the wrong person – King Ahab • 1 Kings 21:25 25 But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up.
