  1. MicroPot Revisited Work in Progress Jaak Lippmaa Helsinki Group, Helsinki Institute of Physics, University of Helsinki Manchester, December 12, 2005

  2. The Revelation Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  3. So, it is back to the ... • Detectors are not supposed to be in the primary beam vacuum • Access to detectors and/or positioning mechanics is preferable • Access mechanics should NOT complicate the re-design of the transfer cryostate Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  4. Considering... • The protons are in the pipe facing the wall • And no access ”SAS” is possible through the QRL • And ”Dimples” are not allowed on the heavy traffic side of the transfer cryostate • And we really really do NOT want to delve into Kelvin temperature detectors Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  5. We have to... • After a meeting last night with Keith, Daniela, Andrew, Krzysztof and myself... • Modify (if only slightly) the Micropot of yesterday • So, if we do some simple trigonometry • And take the vertical dimension of the detector at the beam pipe centre equal to 8mm • We actually have 80mm available for the other dimension where we only need 24mm Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  6. Get oriented... The Wall Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  7. Which means that, what if we... Take the transfer Cryostate, and... Put a tube here... And weld it here... And here... And put a flange here... WE WOULD GET... Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  8. We would get a POT indeed • Which retains Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and other vacuum enclosures • Keeps detectors separated from the beam vacuum • Puts detectors on the same side as the actuator (NB! Both are removable) • Seals everything off with a vacuum shield • Has a service port Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  9. The LONGPOT Concept Proton Beam Emergency Stops Tilt 13º Stepper Motor Bellows Outer Weld Points Beam Pipe Flange Primary Vacuum Detector Detector movement Detector Pocket CWT (optional) Rest Stops Secondary Vacuum Feedthroughs Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  10. What needs to be done? • We really must sit down with Sebastian et al. and get rid of some tubes here and here • We must decide detectors • RF shielding calculations in Cockroft • Decide on safety pullout mech. • Full feasibility study and risk analysis • Design & Construction Schedule and active collaboration partners Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa

  11. That's all from me Manchester 11-13 Dec 2005 MicroPot Revisited Jaak Lippmaa
