  1. Prevention of Mother to Child HIV Pilot Program in Zimbabwe

  2. A Presentation by The Teacher’s Pet Brittany Brown Andy Duvall Brian Joyner Ashelyn James Denise Rodriguez (BADAB!)

  3. PURPOSE Implement a pilot program in Zimbabwe designed to minimize the spread of mother-to-child HIV

  4. Background Info • FIVE MILLION people worldwide were newly infected with HIV in 2003 • 16% were CHILDREN, 90% of them born with the disease • ZIMBABWE has a 24.6% infection rate

  5. PROGRAM SETUP • District Hospital of 120 beds, 22 nurses, 1 matron, and 3 government medical officers • Caters to 280,000 people • EXTREME limitations in supplies and resources • No previous national HIV/AIDS program

  6. Longitudinal 18 month study Placed focus on administrating counseling, testing, and antiretroviral drugs Drug supplies were supplemented Offered voluntary counseling and rapid testing Provided post test counseling Trained nursing staff and social workers METHODOLOGY

  7. RESULTS (Raw Data) • 2,298 had pre-test counseling— 93% accepted HIV testing • 74.3% returned for their results • 74.6% received post-test counseling • 23.8% of the group agreed to receive the antiretroviral drug

  8. INTERPRETATION Number of people going in to get HIV tests is DECREASING!!!

  9. WHY? • Women said they needed to consult their husbands • Needed to think more about testing • Perceived disincentive

  10. CONCLUSION • Most effective means of prevention is COUNSELING, but resources are unavailable • A national program will be implemented because of what was learned from this study • Communication and a well-defined training program is needed • The main priority: Post Care • “Bandwagon Effect”

  11. NEXT STEPS • World Health Organization and UNICEF have developed the “integrated management of sick children” • National AIDS/TB Program (with other partners and the district health authorities) are defining a new follow up package
