  2. We must carefully guard our words!

  3. Overview of the Book of Job. • Eliphaz, Bildad, & Zophar come to comfort Job. • For seven days, they say nothing. • Job then curses the day he was born. • Job’s three friends know better. • He suffers because he has sinned grievously against God. • Job maintains his innocence. • No matter what Job says, his friends accuse him of sin. • He turns his frustration on God. • God is silent & He isn’t answering Job. • Job 23:1-10.

God shows up & answers Job out of the whirlwind. • God recognizes that Job has spoken out of turn. • “Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?” (Job 38:2). • God promises, however, to answer Job’s questions if Job will answer God’s questions. • “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou has understanding.” (Job 38:4). • Job realizes that he has spoken out of turn & utters this morning’s text.

Job didn’t sin in what he said. • Job was wrong in what he said. • God says so: “Who is this that darkenethcounsel by words without knowledge?” (Job 38:2). • Job says so: “Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not” (Job 42:3). • Job did not sin. • “In all this did not Job sin with his lips” (Job 2:10). • God to Eliphaz, “My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath” (Job 42:7).

We must carefully guard our words about God! • At times of suffering, it’s easy to say what’s wrong about God. • We won’t have all the answers. • It’s okay to question. • Jesus did from the cross. • But, we must guard our words. • “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matt 12:34). • Our words are a “heart issue.”

  9. We must carefully guard our words about other people! • “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Eph 4:29).

  10. How do we speak what is useful for edifying?

  11. One: We need to think carefully before we speak. • “Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? There is more hope of a fool than of him.” (Prov 29:20). • Stop before you speak & ask, “Am I going to build this person up?” • Two: We speak to build up, not to tear down. • Words have tremendous power. • “Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man” (Col 4:6).

  12. We must carefully guard our words! • Therefore: • Let’s think before we speak. • Let’s make sure we speak what is edifying. • Challenge: Find someone to whom you can speak an edifying word this afternoon.

  13. Do you need to come and confess the sweet name of Jesus?
