Central Rappahannock Regional Library's Betsy Fowler and Chris Glover explore innovative ways to showcase the vibrant and life-changing impact of libraries. This presentation emphasizes the use of storytelling, combined with narrative, photography, and accessible technology, to engage the community and communicate the library's relevance. With limited budget and time, they effectively utilized Microsoft Photo Story 3 to create a compelling documentary-style presentation featuring human interest stories and patron experiences, proving that technology should enhance, not hinder, creativity.

Who Needs The Public Library? Betsy Fowler – Branch Services Coordinator Central Rappahannock Regional Library Chris Glover – Network Services Central Rappahannock Regional Library
The Concept • Goal: Convey the message that libraries are vibrant and relevant - Libraries change lives • Use storytelling as a marketing tool • Combine narrative, photos and technology to create a compelling presentation
The Process • Enlisted help of trial attorney/storyteller • Collected human interest stories involving the library • Asked patrons to pose and give us quotes
The Process • Took many, many pictures of people using the library and selected the best • Wrote the script telling both the big picture and also intimate stories
Technology • Betsy has an idea • Something MORE than a boring PowerPoint • But . . . • Only two weeks • No money so . . . • No new hardware or software for production
Technology Oh, and by the way . . . The presentation should include - Several hundred photos - Voice Narration - Background Music And should look kind of like a documentary
Technology • Microsoft Photo Story 3 • Requirements • Windows XP • Windows Media Player 10 • Decent PC (P4, 1.7Ghz or better, 512 Mb) • Microphone • Designed for home users
Technology • Gather images • Import images into Photo Story • Photo Story builds pans, zooms and transitions automatically • Add narration • Pick background music • Generate movie
Technology - Conclusion • Low cost • Quick to learn • Easy to use • Limited – but it did what we needed • Creates a remarkably professional looking product. • The technology should NOT be the stumbling block in this process!
