  1. UK Masterclasses Masterclasses at UK Particle Physics groups Peter Watkins Many thanks to 16 UK groups for all the information

  2. Some common features • Introductory Talks on Physics and exercises • Identifying LEP events • Lancaster Particle Physics package • Minerva – Identifying W&Z events in ATLAS • Computing exercises usually in pairs • Q/A and discussion sessions in groups • Detector Activities or experiments

  3. Many different ideas • Whole day - Half day • Once or two days (three at RAL!) • Whole classes or ‘selected’ students • Staff or PhD Students giving lectures • Rotating groups around different activities • Combining results from many pairs • Hand held voting devices

  4. Most Successful features • Quiz/ competition/prizes • Question/answer or group discussions • Video links to CERN (or other countries) • Working in teams (mixing schools) • Some lectures and computing exercises

Some issues for discussion • Availability of STFC and CERN brochures • Dates of International Masterclasses • Best dates for UK Masterclasses • Web page support for UK Masterclasses • Best way to share ideas between groups • Mix of role models giving talks • Range of topics for talks • What are the main aims of the day? • Significant investment in time by group • What about a new UK wide outreach initiative?
