This lab focuses on understanding measurement and uncertainties in chemistry by utilizing various glassware, including beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks, volumetric flasks, and graduated cylinders. Students will evaluate the precision of balances and the influence of their placement in the lab. Further, they will check the accuracy of thermometers and analyze water loss during transfers between graduated containers. Finally, the accuracy of burets will be assessed. Emphasis will be placed on uncertainties, significant figures, and unit conversions.

Measurement and Uncertainties Lab IB Chemistry 2012-2013
Choose the Following • 3 Different Sized Beakers • 3 Different Sized Erlenmeyer flasks • 2 Different Sized Volumetric Flask • 3 Different Sized Graduated Cylinders • The different scales at the back of the room • A Buret
For Each • Name the Uncertainty • Sig Figs • Unit
Answer the following • How consistent are the balances? Does it matter where in the room the balance is placed? • How would you check to see that the thermometers are reading correctly at 0C and 100C • What is the average amount of water lost to the sides of the container when transferring from a graduated cylinder to beaker? Does the size of the g.c. matter? • Is the buret accurate?
