  1. Sample A The British did not treat the British people and the Chinese people equally. They gave the important and senior posts to British people instead of Chinese people. As evident in the passage, the British gave the order to get twelve magistrates from the merchants who were all British and non-Chinese. The British respected the different cultures and practises of the different racial groups. When they made laws, the British made exceptions for the different racial practices.

  2. Sample B The British could not reduce the lawlessness in Singapore due to the lack of officials and too small police force. This is probably because most of the locals did not want to take up the job as a policeman as probably the pay was too low. The source also shows that the British tried to enforce law and order in Singapore as code of law was made based on English law.

  3. Sample C From the extract, we can infer that we faced many problems in the past when the British governed Singapore in the past. It means that the British did not govern Singapore properly in the past. The fact that the police force set up was painfully inadequate and there was lawlessness everywhere. There was also too few officials in the government. However, we can also infer that the British had tried to improve themselves. This is supported by the fact that the British issued a regulation to improve governing.
