Papaverine: An Antispasmodic Drug for Visceral and Vasospasm Treatment

Papaverine is an opium alkaloid and antispasmodic medication primarily used for treating visceral spasms and vasospasms, including those affecting the heart and brain. Unlike other opium alkaloids, such as morphine, papaverine does not function as an analgesic. It has a unique structure and pharmacological action, allowing it to be effective in managing erectile dysfunction on occasion. Its selective action makes it a valuable option in specific clinical scenarios for patients experiencing spastic disorders.

  1. Papaverine is an opium alkaloid antispasmodic drug, used primarily in the treatment of visceral spasm, vasospasm (especially those involving the heart and the brain), and occasionally in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. While it is found in the opium poppy, papaverine differs in both structure and pharmacological action from the analgesic (morphine-related) opium alkaloids (opioids).
