Dr. Seuss’s Life • Born in Springfield, Massachusetts • Real name is Theodor Geisel • Mother’s name was Seuss • Attended Dartmouth College • editor-in-chief of the Jack-O-Lantern, • Dartmouth’s humor magazine. • Then attended Oxford University in England • Pursued career as a cartoonist • He created advertising campaigns for Standard Oil • He made political cartoons for PM magazine • His first book ‘And to Think That I saw It on Mulberry Street was rejected 27 times • Vanguard Press published the bookThe Cat in the Hat was the first book to be popular • Wrote and illustrated 44 children’s books • Died September 24, 1991 from throat cancer • His works have been translated into 15 different languages and sold more than 200 million copies. • Has been awarded for this work nationally • Has been awarded two Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards, a Peabody, and a Pulitzer Prize
