NECESSARY CARE DURING LION2 DEPLOYMENT • Make sure LION2 deployment operations did not impact LION service operation • Possible causes for impacts were identified… • Connection of the LION2 cable to the dormant BU • Switching BU from LION nominal state to LION+LION2 nominal state • … and mitigated • All LION2 was laid before dormant BU connexion • BU connexion was carried out during low traffic hours • BU was switched to its new nominal state during low traffic hours LION LION2 System - Poster Presentation - 24 April 2013

CHANGING THE PROTECTION SCHEME • Initial Protection scheme : MSP 1+1 • It was well adapted for the initial LION configuration (two point-to-point links) • But it doubled capacity use for the purpose of protection • New protection scheme : Mesh restoration • Based on G-ASON (GMLPS) • Classical ring protection on the repeatered part of the system would double the capacity use (like MSP 1+1) • Classical ring protection is not so interesting for the new configuration (the repeatered part is a small ring with 4 nodes) • Mesh restoration offers very good flexibility • A range of protection level are possible • Protection is managed on a VC4 circuit basis LION LION2 System - Poster Presentation - 24 April 2013

  10. DIVERSITY OF LANDINGS AND CABLE STATIONS • Diversity of landing and station was ensured in all three landings were other cables already existed • Mauritius: diversity w.r.t. THE MAYOTTE LAGOON • The Mayotte lagoon contained an area (4 km wide) with many coral outcrops (pinnacles) • Around 30 suspensions were observed in that zone after initial cable lay • All suspensions were sucessfully removed by diver teams LION LION2 System - Poster Presentation - 24 April 2013

KEEPING DELAYS UNDER CONTROL PERMITTING DELAYS • Permitting is a process specific to each country and the date of delivery is often difficult to predict • After an initial phase of overconfidence, unexpected delays were observed for one of the landing permits • We came close to a situation where the cable ship would be held up waiting at the limit of the territorial waters • Better anticipation would have been needed • A more flexible contractual framework with suppliers to handle such situations gracefully • We put in place a plan B for the landing site but it was not needed at the end of the day STATION DELIVERY DELAYS • The station site was depending on the landing site • Therefore we also put in place a plan B for an alternative station site • The delivery of the station was also delayed by the permitting delay • The critical point was the delivery of the final energy supply equipment • System commissioning started with a temporary energy supply setup • Final energy was up and running at the end of the commissioning LION LION2 System - Poster Presentation - 24 April 2013

CONCLUSION • The LION+LION2 system is a consortium-owned cable built in two phases • Moving from LION to LION+LION2 implied a significant context change • Extension of the consortium from 3 to 6 co-owners • Changing the protection scheme • The following challenges were successfully met • Ensure landing diversity for landings and sites providing interconnexion to other cables • Avoid any impact to LION operation when deploying LION2 • Keeping permitting and station delivery delays under control LION LION2 System - Poster Presentation - 24 April 2013
