Adverbs of Frequency There are four main adverbs of frequency: always, usually, sometimes, and never. (There are many other adverbs of frequency, e.g.: frequently, often, occasionally, seldom, etc.)

Adverbs of Frequency Always shows that something happens all of the time. Usually shows that something happens most of the time. Sometimes shows that something happens about half of the time. Never shows that something doesn’t ever happen.

Adverbs of Frequency • Adverbs of frequency usually come before the main verb: • I usually wake up at 6. • He never eats liver. • But, after the verb be: • I am always early to class. • He is sometimes late to work.

Note Occasionally, sometimes, often, frequently and usuallycan also go at the beginning or end of a sentence: • Sometimes they come and stay with us. • I play tennis occasionally. Rarely and seldomcan also go at the end of a sentence (often with "very"): • We see them rarely. • John eats meat very seldomly.
