  1. John 18:37-38

  2. Truth is Discussed • Jesus said: • “He would bear witness unto the truth” • “Every one that was ‘of the truth’ would hear His voice” • Pontius Pilate asked: • “What is truth?” • Implies that truth is subjective – no absolute truth

  3. What is Truth: Is Truth Subjective? • “Almost everyone in the U.S. believes that truth exists. However, a large majority of both adults and teenagers, Christian and non-Christian, contends that there is no absolute moral truth. More than two out of three adults and more than four out of five teenagers argue that truth is always relative to the individual and the circumstances. While most of these people describe themselves as followers of Christ and say that the Bible is accurate in all of its teachings, they nevertheless believe that truth is based on feelings, experience or emotion.” (www.Barna.org) http://www.barna.org/barna-update/article/5-barna-update/87-barna-identifies-seven-paradoxes-regarding-americas-faith

  4. What is Truth: Is Truth Subjective? • Great deception of modern times • Facilitates comfort with sin • Gives man the authority to determine right from wrong • A Smack in the face to God: • Want His salvation, name, and protection • Reject His truths in exchange of human ‘truth’! • (John 15:10) “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.”

  5. What is Truth: Is Truth Subjective? “We believe that each man must find the truththat is right for him.Reality will adapt accordingly. The universe will readjust. History will alter. We believe that there is no absolute truthexcepting the truth that there is no absolute truth.” (Creed, Steve Turner) http://poemhunter.com/poem/creed/

  6. Truth is a Reality • Everything around us works by the reality of truth! • Computers – 0 1 0 1 – On or Off – True or False • Science – Sun gives its light – truth! • History – Roman Empire existed – truth! • Morals – Wrong to kill the innocent – truth? • Without absolute truth – Chaos • Truths of the Bible are factual, reality, and absolute!

  7. 2 John 1-4 • “The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.”

  8. Our Relationship is found in Truth • (2 John 1:1) “…whom I love in the truth.” • John loved “in the truth” • They both dwelled in truth • Our relationship is one of a family • (Eph 2:19) “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.”

  9. Our Relationship is found in Truth • In this relationship by being obedient to the truth • (John 1:12-13) “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” • (1 Peter 1:22) “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.”

  10. Truth Can be Known • (2 John 1:2) “…who have known the truth.” • Truth can be known! • (John 7:17) “If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching…” • If there’s a will, then there’s a way!

  11. Truth Can be Known • Some say that you may see it this way and I see it that way • True, that could be so – But if a person is willing to hear God, then we both can be united. • Unlimited amount of opinions, but ONE truth • (1 Cor 1:10) “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

  12. Truth Can be Known • How can we know the truth? • By studying the word of God • (John 17:17) “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” • God’s word is truth – Therefore, to know the truth, we need to know the word of God • Where is God’s word? • (2 Tim 3:16-17) “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

  13. Truth Can Dwell in Us • (2 John 1:2) “…which dwells in us.” • Not only know truth but let her dwell in you • (Col 3:16) “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” • When something dwells – puts up residence

  14. Truth Can Dwell in Us • (1 John 2:14) “I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.” • (Ps 119:11) “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

  15. Grace, Mercy, and Peace Comes Through the Truth • (2 John 1:3) “Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.” • What does Grace, Mercy, and Peace Mean? • How do we receive them through the Truth?

  16. Grace, Mercy, and Peace Comes Through the Truth • Grace – Unmerited Favor • (Eph 2:5) “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)” • (Titus 2:11-12) “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;”

  17. Grace, Mercy, and Peace Comes Through the Truth • Mercy – Pardon from Sins • (1 Peter 2:10) “Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” • (Eph 1:13-14) “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

  18. Grace, Mercy, and Peace Comes Through the Truth • Peace – Tranquility of our Spirit • (Rom 5:1) “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” • Faith comes by the word of God – Truth • (Rom 10:17) “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

  19. Grace, Mercy, and Peace Comes Through the Truth Grace – Unmerited Favor Mercy – Pardon Peace – Tranquility of Spirit “Thy word is truth”

  20. Truth Can be Walked In • (2 John 1:4) “I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth” • To Walk in Truth is to Walk as Christ Walk • (1 John 2:4-6) “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” • How did He walk?

  21. Truth Can be Walked In • (Hosea 14:9) “Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.” • To walk with Christ is to walk according to the ways of God – revealed in His word • (James 1:22) “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” • Are you walking in the truth?

  22. Conclusion • Truth is a Reality and is found in the word of God • Everyone can know this truth • With this truth: • We can live in a special relationship with God • We can let truth dwell in us! – Be acceptable to God • We can have Grace, Mercy, and Peace • We can walk with Christ
