  4. Glossing IMPORTANT Rules • Always write in singular present tense • English: You went home yesterday. • ASL Gloss: YESTERDAY HOME YOU GO • *Adjectives are always after the object or subject • English: Please sit in the blue chair. • ASL Gloss: CHAIR-IX IT BLUE SIT PLEASE *describing word

  5. ASL Syntax (word order) • OS order means Objectfirst then Subject • Ex: • English: There is some white paper. • ASL Gloss: PAPER-IX IT WHITE

  7. REMEMBER: • There are always exceptions to every rule. ASL is a living language and is changing every day.
