  1. THE BIG BANG THEORY • How was the Universe formed? • What is the evidence for the formation of the Universe?

What is the Big Bang (BB) theory? = a theory that explains the origins of the universe • Billions of years ago, all energy in the universe was compressed into an extremely small space (smaller than the size of a grain of sand). • About 14 billion years ago (bya), a sudden event (the BB) sent all of the energy outward in all directions

  3. What happened? • Unimaginably high temperatures & pressure • As the universe expanded • Temperatures cooled • Matter started to form • Some of the matter evolved into clumps that formed galaxies • The Universe continues to cool and expand!

  4. What is the fate of the universe? 2 thoughts: • Endless expansion - it will go on forever • “The Big Crunch”- turn cold and collapse on itself

  5. Evidence for the Big Bang • Red-Shifts observed in light spectra from galaxies means the universe is expanding • Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation • Abundance of hydrogen and helium.
