  2. Lt Col Schlaefer was a 1988 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, with a degree in engineering mechanics, and a minor in Russian. Her first assignment was at Vandenberg Air Force Base, as a payload systems engineer and spacecraft launch controller for the Second Space Launch Squadron. She attended UC Santa Barbara for a masters’ degree in Mechanical Engineering, followed by a four-year tour at USAFA teaching engineering mechanics. Lt Col Schlaefer then served as Chief of Space Launch Range Testing at Headquarters AFOTEC, Kirtland AFB, NM. While at Kirtland, she also served as the executive officer for the 377th Air Base Wing for one year. In August 2000, Lt Col Schlaefer began doctoral studies at Penn State, graduating in 2003 with a degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics. Upon graduation, she assumed the lead of the Polymer Working Group, in AFRL’s Space and Missile Propulsion Division at Edwards AFB. She then served as deputy division chief, programs, for a year prior to moving the Detachment 7 Commander position.Lt Col Schlaefer is a native of California, with her hometown in Tollhouse, CA. She is married to Mark Schlaefer, and has two daughters, Abigail (18 mo.) and Mae (18 mo.).
