  1. Chemical Reactions Synthesis Decomposition Combustion Single Replacement Double Replacement

  2. Synthesis Reaction A + B AB One or more elements combine to form one compound. VCR clip from World of Chemistry

  3. Synthesis Examples • 2H2 + O2  2H2O • C+ O2  CO2 It’s your turn… Na(s) + Cl2(g)  Al(s) + F2(g)  Mg(s) + F2(g) 

  4. Decomposition Reaction AB A + B One compound breaks down into its component elements or parts. Demo…

  5. Decomposition Examples • Solid Lead (IV) oxide decomposes PbO2(s)  • Aluminum nitride decomposes AlN(s)  Hydrolysis Demo…

  6. Combustion Reaction Any compound reacting with oxygen (O2) in the air. H2 Demo…

  7. Combustion Reaction Examples Hint: There doesn’t always have to be an explosion… it could just be reacting with O2 in the air and releasing heat. (Also, if it is a hydrocarbon that is combusting Ex.) CH4, then the products will always be H2O and CO2. For example… CxHy + O2 CO2 + H2O C4H10 + O2 → Mg(s) + O2 →

  8. Single Replacement A + BX B + AX One or more elements combine to form one compound. Zn in CuCl2 solution demo…

  9. Single Replacement Reactions only happen if the element (A) is more reactive than the one in the compound (B). A + BX B + AX To find out… check the ACTIVITY SERIES OF ELEMENTS!!

  10. The ACTIVITY SERIES OF ELEMENTS

  11. Examples of single replacement reactions: (Work these in your notes) Mn + Zn(NO3)2 Mg + AgNO3 Mg + LiNO3 Cl2 + KI Li + H2O Ag + KNO3 Zn + AgNO3 Al + H2SO4 Br2 + NaF

  12. Double Replacement AX + BYBX + AY Two compounds switch their cations to form two new compounds. Demo…

  13. Double Replacements form at least 1 of these 3 things:water, a gas, or a precipitate water (l) gas (g) precipitate (s)

  14. Double Replacement Examples • NaCl + AgNO3NaNO3 + AgCl(s) Precipitate (s) It’s your turn… AgNO3(aq) + KCl(aq)  NaNO3(aq) + KCl(aq) 

  15. Precipitate - a solid falling out of solution. For example, it’s the solid, chunky, yellow stuff that you see when you react Pb(NO3)3 and KI. Watch this… COOL

  16. Your homework!! Complete a video of a chemical reaction from home… preferably vinegar added to baking soda in a glass. Complete with chemical information, safety precautions, procedure, written equation, and description of the experiment. Example
