  1. Experiencing the Spirit of God

  2. John 14:16-17 “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever - the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 15:26“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father - the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father - he will testify about me. John 16:7-8 “it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”

  3. When we place faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, we receive God’s gift of salvation (John 1:12; Romans 6:23) and the Spirit of God performs four major works: 1. Regeneration -We receive spiritual life from the Holy Spirit (Ti. 3:5; Eph. 2:1; I Jn. 5:11-12) 2. Indwelling -All Christians are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9; I Cor. 6:19-20; II Cor. 1:21-22).

  4. 3. Baptism -Although the apostle Paul recognized different levels of spiritual growth and gifts among believers in Corinth, he wrote, “we all were immersed with one Spirit into one body” (I Corinthians 12:13). This reference supplies the definition for historical illustrations like Acts 19:1-7). 4. Sealing- The Spirit who regenerates,  indwells and baptizes each believer is our seal of security guaranteeing the completion of salvation (Eph. 1:13; 4:30; II Cor. 1:21-22).

  5. My primary concern for us is that through the Holy Spirit who prompts us to cry out to God, “Abba Father” - we will all experience… • Confirmation • Assurance • Comfort • Confidence • Clarity • Closeness … In our relationship with God.

  6. Galatians 4:6 “Because you are his sons,God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,Father.” (NIV) “And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” (NLT) (v. 6 - οτιδεεστευιοιεξαπεστειλενοθεοςτοπνευματουυιουαυτουειςταςκαρδιαςημωνκραζοναββαοπατηρ)

  7. Romans 8:15-16 “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’(ἐνᾧκράζομενἈββᾶὁΠατήρ). The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children” (NIV) “So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” (NLT) (v. 16- αὐτὸτὸΠνεῦμασυνμαρτυρεῖτῷπνεύματιἡμῶνὅτιἐσμὲντέκναΘεοῦ)

  8. The threat to experiencing the Spirit A failure to understand the basis for one’s standing with God as a gift of God’s grace through faithin Christ by the Spirit and not by keeping laws. It is a “step backwards into the negative sphere of human self-justification and rebellion against the grace of God” (Timothy George, NAC, Galatians). The contrast is between two ways of approaching God (beginning) and two ways of experiencing the ongoing activity of God in life (completing). It’s a difference between doing works by our own strength to gain God’s approval and trusting only in the work Christ has done for us as the basis for acceptance with God

  9. Galatians 2:16-21 “…we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law. But suppose we seek to be made right with God through faith in Christ and then we are found guilty because we have abandoned the law. Would that mean Christ has led us into sin? Absolutely not! Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down. For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements - so that I might live for God. My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.” (NLT)

  10. Galatians contrasts relating to God (in salvation and Christian living) by law (Torah) and by the flesh (human effort) with by faith in Christ and by the Spirit.

  11. Galatians 3:2 “I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?” (NIV) “Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ.” (NLT)

  12. The Galatians 3:2 Contrast 3:2 – Did you receive the Spirit (τὸΠνεῦμαἐλάβετε,cf. 3:14 – “…so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit”). Receive - as a gift apart from any contribution of good works (cf. I Cor. 4:7). • By works of Law - ἐξἔργωννόμου • By hearing with faith - ἐξἀκοῆςπίστεως

  13. Galatians 3:3 “Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?” (NIV) “How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” (NLT)

  14. The Galatians 3:3 Contrast • Having begun by the Spirit (ἐναρξάμενοιΠνεύματι) 2. Now in the flesh are you being perfected? (νῦνσαρκὶἐπιτελεῖσθε)

  15. Galatians 3:5 “So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?” (NIV) “I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.” (NLT)

  16. Galatians 3:19 “Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised.” (NLT) Galatians 4:4-5 “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” (NIV)

  17. Galatians 3:10-13 “But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.’ So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, ‘It is through faith that a righteous person has life.’ This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, ‘It is through obeying the law that a person has life.’ But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing.”

  18. Galatians 4:10-11 “So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world? You are trying to earn favor with God by observing certain days or months or seasons or years. I fear for you.” (NLT)

  19. Philippians 3:3 • For we who worship by the Spirit of God • We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. • We put no confidence in human effort,”

  20. How did they get in this mess? Galatians 1:6-9 “I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News 7 but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.8 Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. 9 I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed.” Galatians 3:1 “Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you?” Galatians 4:17-20 “Those false teachers are so eager to win your favor, but their intentions are not good. They are trying to shut you off from me so that you will pay attention only to them...19 Oh, my dear children! I feel as if I’m going through labor pains for you again, and they will continue until Christ is fully developed in your lives. 20 I wish I were with you right now so I could change my tone.”

  21. Galatians 5:7-12 “You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth? 8 It certainly isn’t God, for he is the one who called you to freedom. … God will judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you. … 12 I just wish that those troublemakers who want to mutilate you by circumcision would mutilate themselves.” Galatians 6:12-14 “Those who are trying to force you to be circumcised want to look good to others. They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save. 13 And even those who advocate circumcision don’t keep the whole law themselves. They only want you to be circumcised so they can boast about it and claim you as their disciples.14 As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  22. Emphasis on the Holy Spirit Galatians 5-6 Walking by the Spirit Being led by the Spirit Bearing the fruit of the Spirit Keeping in step with the Spirit Sowing to the Spirit Ephesians 5:18-21 Being filled with the Spirit
