  1. The Evolution from Motorized Bicycle to Electric Bike!

  2. A motorized bicycle, as the name suggests, is a bicycle with an attached motor. It may have or may not have pedal-assist to power transmission. Its use may need meeting governmental licensing and registration requirements as per its classification as a motor vehicle, moped, motorbike or a hybrid vehicle. The Engines Used A motorized bicycle uses all variety of engines. The multiple engines include an internal combustion engine, different stroke gasoline engines, diesel engine, electric and steam engine. The

  3. motorized bicycles frames and technologies have been an extension of a standard bicycle. The Evolution In the earlier time, a motor and transmission were attached to a regular bicycle to make it motorized. Then came the infant age of gasoline engine and transmission designs with less power to weight ratio where dual purpose propulsion system was popular. In a further stage, two or four-stroke gasoline engine bicycles replaced pedal propulsion bicycles. Still, in times of fuel shortages, the concept of using motor assist for ordinary bicycle prevails. Some motorized bicycles are self- propelled. In present times, a motorized bicycle is available as a complete design or the user can convert a bike into motorized or electric bike with the add-on motor kit. Electric motors have become popular due to the development of lighter and powerful batteries. However, many companies are still manufacturing aftermarket internal combustion engine motor-conversion kits for conventional bicycles. The latest lithium batteries, along with electronic controls, offer users increased power and range while reducing weight.

  4. Ways to apply power in a motorized bicycle The rear or front wheel may be powered directly by a motor built into the hub. A motor mounted in the frame, behind the rider or under the frame may drive the rear wheel through sprocket with a chain or rubber belt or through a crank that allows gearing in the motorized system. Power may be transferred through friction drive involving power brought by roller or rubber belt from a motor mounted above. Power sources for a motorized bicycle Internal Combustion with fuel and oil Electric Hybrid electric or petroleum Other power sources like steam and air The legal status of the motorized bicycle in different countries varies. For example, the legislation in Australia supports electric power-assisted bikes over an electric bike. And, e-bikes require registration, and in Canada, each province exercises its own authority. Each country varies in its legal definition of

  5. motorized bicycle. The United States and United Kingdom federal law exempts low-speed electric bikes from motor vehicle regulations.
