  2. Founding Purpose & Mission • Founded in 1977 • Advocates library instruction and information literacy as a part of lifelong learning • Supports librarians engaged in library instruction and information literacy in all types of libraries.

  3. Goals • Increase professional and public awareness of the need for library instruction and information literacy. • Encourage the development of American Library Association policy promoting library instruction and information literacy. • Assist library practitioners in the development, improvement, and promotion of library instruction and information literacy activities. • Broaden the base of LIRT membership by attracting members from all types of libraries, and to encourage active involvement of LIRT members in the organization. • Create programming that appeals to instruction librarians from all types of libraries.

Goals (cont.) • Provide opportunities in which librarians from all types of libraries can share ideas about library instruction and information literacy. • Encourage the networking of professional library instruction and information literacy groups. • Encourage library schools to include education for library instruction and information literacy in their curricula. • Maintain an organizational structure that enables the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Library Instruction Round Table.

Vision • LIRT will be: • An inclusive, energetic and diverse multi-type library organization • Recognized as the first stop for practical methods in library pedagogy, information literacy, and point-of-need service. • LIRT will utilize technology to: • Enhance communication • Outreach to other organizations • Build community, and • Recruit new librarians for active engagement

Getting Involved At Conferences: • Attend Bites with LIRT lunches • Participate in the Discussion Forums (Midwinter) • Attend the LIRT Annual Conference Program • Visit the LIRT booth in the Exhibits at the Annual Conference • Attend All Committees' Meeting Between Conferences: • Visit and bookmark the Web site at http://www.ala.org/ala/lirt • Subscribe to the LIRT-L listserv • Receive the LIRT Newsletter and read featured columns: • Tech Talk • Member A-LIRT • 20 Top BI Articles of the Year • Read and use ALA/LIRT Publications

Joining LIRT • Select LIRT from the round table section when applying for or renewing your ALA membership • Print out the form from the LIRT website and send it with a check or money order to the provided address • LIRT Membership Dues • ALA Personal Members: $15 • ALA Institutional Members: $25
