  4. Impressment of sailors • Britain kidnaps our sailors to use in the British navy

  5. Embargo Act of 1807 • President Jefferson’s reaction to impressment • US refuses to trade with British • Hurts northern merchants more than the British

  6. President Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality • President Washington insists that the US will not become involved in the conflict between Britain and France

  7. President Washington’s Farewell Address • No entangling alliances • No political parties

  8. War Hawks • In favor of war against Britain in 1812 • Henry Clay • John C. Calhoun

  9. War of 1812 • Proved the US could defend itself • US gained respect as an independent country • Started because of impressment • Most important battle was at New Orleans after the war was over.

  11. Treaty of Ghent • Ended the War of 1812

  12. Adams-Onis Treaty • Gained Florida and set the boundary of the US

  13. Jay’s Treaty • Meant to end impressment • Set trade requirements between US and Britain

  14. Pinckney’s Treaty • Settled the border dispute between US and Spain • US gets right of deposit in New Orleans
