  1. Mesopotamian Problems & Solutions Objective: SWBAT identify & teach their partner the ways Mesopotamian’s coped with problems. Calisthenics: Define drought Define Irrigation What kind of irrigation do we use today? HOMEWORK: HAVE AN AMAZING WEEKEND! REST UP AND ENJOY YOURSELF!

  2. Mesopotamia was known as… • The Fertile Crescent! MESOPOTAMIA!

  3. Problem #1: Lack of Protection

  4. Problem: • They Mesopotamians did not have anymountains or natural barriers to protect them. As a result people came tostealorinvade them. They lacked thetreesandstone to build strong barriers.

  5. Solution – YAY! • The Mesopotamians usedbrick wallsto surround villages. These walls were very thick and had guard towers. The walls were also surrounded by a wide open ditch. AMoatis a water filled barrier to provide defense against invader.

  7. Problem #2- Possibility of Drought!

  8. Problem: • Possibility of Drought • Because the climate in Mesopotamia wasarid, farmers never knew if there would be adrought. Also the farmers would be helpless If the river did not flood.

  9. Solution: Woo Hoo! • The Mesopotamians created anirrigationsystem. This was basically building small canals from the river to water their crops. This was important because they no longer needed torelyon the flood every year.

  10. Problem #3- Lack of Natural Resources

  11. Problem • The Mesopotamians lacked natural resources such asstoneandwood

  12. Solution! Yipee! • In order to build their homes they usedreeds and mud. They mixed mud andstrawto create bricks for stability. They hardened these bricks by leaving them out in thesun. These homes however werenot strong and could easily be damaged by badweather

  13. But they STILL lack Natural Resources…AHHh!!!!

  14. Solution, Phew! • The Mesopotamians obtained wood, stone and copper throughtradewith people throughout SouthwestAsia. In exchange for thesegoodsthe Mesopotamians offeredgrain, dates, and farm products. They also traded forluxuryitems. These luxury items were ivory, gold, ebony, andprecious stones.
