Statistics for Young Drivers • Traffic crashes are the number one cause of death among children and young adults • 16-year-olds are three times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than the average of all drivers • In 2005, 23% of drivers ages 15 to 20 who died in motor vehicle crashes had a BAC of 0.08 g/dl or higher • In 2006, 5,156 13 to 19-year-old drivers were involved in fatal crashes • 20 percent of 11th grade drivers reported at least one crash over the past year • About 30% of crashes killing young drivers involve alcohol

  3. Speeding Can Kill • 1km/h increase in mean speed typically results in a 3% increase in accidents • 5% die in a 30km/h collision while 85% die when the speed is 60km/h • 13,113 lives were lost in speed related accidents in 2005 • In 2005, 38 percent of the male drivers age 15 to 20 who were involved in fatal crashes were speeding at the time of the crash

  4. Speeding Tickets Costs • In 2000 the cost of speeding-related crashes was estimated to be $40.4 billion. That equals $76,865 per minute or $1,281 per second • Motor vehicle crashes cost society an estimated $7,300 per second
