  1. BCIS-1 Objective: To determine whether routine IABP insertion before high risk PCI reduces MACCE at 28 days. Study: Multicenter, randomized trial (17 centers). Population: High risk patients undergoing PCI of native or bypass grafts (LVEF ≤ 30% and a large amount of myocardium subtended by stenosed vessels (CBIS-1 score ≥ 8)). End point: MACCE(death, acute MI, CVA, further revascularization at 28 days).

  2. PCI Elective IABP n=151 Randomized n=301 No planned IABP n=150 BCIS-1

  3. BCIS-1 Event rate at 28 days P=0.85 P=0.34 P=0.85 P=0.21

  4. BCIS-1 P=0.32 P=0.06 P<0.001 P=0.06

  5. BCIS-1 Conclusion: Elective IABP insertion did not reduce the incidence of MACCE following high risk PCI. Perera et al. JAMA 2010;304:867-74
