Socialization of Gender • The process of learning the social expectations of your gender. • Occurs through: • Parents • School • Peers • Mass media • Different social roles: • Girls – ex. baking, cleaning • Boys – ex. mowing the lawn, taking out the trash • Young girls are taught that when a boy is mean to you or teases you it means he likes you.

  5. Women and the Media • A society that objectifies and commodifies women contributes to a culture of violence against them • Pop culture and the media are huge sources of degrading stereotypes and attitudes towards women • The media uses images of sexualized women to sell products • Pop and hip hop music often times sexualizes and dehumanizes women, portraying them as sexual objects available for the use of men

  6. rainn.org • Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network • Created National Hotline: 1-800-656-HOPE • Focus on education to prevent sexual assault • Website includes background information, statistics, news, and policies • tips on getting help for yourself and loved ones

  8. Make Your Move Missoula • Recently created in Missoula • Launched an eye catching ad campaign aiming to raise awareness about sexual violence in the small town • Gathered a large following on social media networks and intend to spread the message all over Missoula • Campaign shames rapists rather then blames victims • Common phrases used by attackers are turned into mantras of support and aid
