Quick News… • 4 weeks to review for the CST!!! • 53/52 days until the end of the school year • 39/38 school days • 24 more times that you have to go to each class • We will continue with our Root Mondays/ Tuesdays today with three roots. • Mini-CST Quiz #2 this next Thursday/Friday • Vocab Quiz #7 this next Thursday/Friday

  3. Objectives: What you will be able to do after today’s lesson… • To diagram root words and expand your vocabulary. • To read and comprehend the plot, characterization, and themes within our class novel, The Giver.

  4. But WHY???? • We’re getting ready for the war (CST). Remember, you may have lost some of the battles (benchmarks), but you will win the war (CST)!!!! • Learning root words can help you expand your vocabulary without really having to learn 100’s of words. You can break down the roots within a word and make an educated guess on its meaning. • Breaking down the plot, characterization, and themes within a story will help you understand and comprehend what you are reading while also making you a better reader.

  5. Do Now (page 31L) Superlatives and Comparatives • You need to create a comparative or superlative for the following adjectives based on our class novel, The Giver. • You can compare people or things from the story. • The first one is done for you below… • Jonas is the most honest person in Sameness. or • Jonas is more honest than his father. • Honest • Curious • Quiet • Pretty • Happy • Hard • Confusing • Comfortable • Beautiful • Serious

  6. Mini-CST Quiz #1 (Weeks 1 and 2)-Mark wrong answers incorrect, and leave correct answers alone. Use your best judgment on each of the questions, and if you cannot read it, mark it wrong. After we go over each section, you need to put the number they got correct for that particular section. If they do not have the all parts of the question correct, then it is wrong.

  7. Roots • Bio- means life. • AUDI- means sound or hear. • CHRON- means time. • BENE- means good. # correct / 4 (for this section)

  8. Vocabulary Use your best judgment. If it’s something close, then give it to them  5. Astonishing means amazing or surprising. 6. Middle means equally distant from the outer limits or central. 7. Courage is a noun. 8. Gasp is a verb. # correct over/ 4 (for this section)

It is the most common cause of death in the US. Every minute of the day, someone dies from a heart attack.

  17. MLA In-Text Citations and Bibliography 24. The bibliography should go in alphabetical order (ABC order). 25. In-text citations go at the end of paragraphs within the actual essay that you are writing.   21. 32R-L – Root Diagram--Assignment: Working with a partner you will have 20 minutes to chart out the roots GEO-, RE- and ANTI---Use a dictionary to help you find words that contain your root.

Quotes, facts, testimony, opinions, statistics, charts • Why do author’s use evidence? to make people believe or convince persuade readers • Bias leaning towards a specific side based on opinions or likes/dislikes • Example: saying “cats are better than dogs” when you are a cat owner and have never even had a dog • Stereotyping a broad generalization about a specific group of people based on 1 or few people within that group • Example: People that wear glasses are smart.
